Now, with the wisdom of the Lama's oral instructions, I have briefly explained this part, and all that becomes clear in the future should be regarded as the power of this text. Therefore, this fasting ritual must have three complete parts: preliminary, main, and concluding. For example, in the case of the Saga Dawa (fourth month of the Tibetan calendar) festival, the eleventh is the preliminary, the fifteenth is the main part, and the early morning of the sixteenth is the concluding part. First, on the day of the preliminary, one must complete bathing and taking vows before sunrise, and then begin the ritual. Before noon, one can take food, either Tsampa made of rice, wheat, or barley, or any white sweets, which should be offered to the noble ones and given to servants and children, and used moderately on one seat. Unsuitable foods include meat, blood, garlic, onions, radishes, beans, and sesame. Drinks should also be used moderately, not immoderately. On the day of the main part, at dawn or after waking up, one should bathe and take the vows of fasting, and since the body is abiding in fasting, one must abstain from food and drink, not even a grain of rice or a drop of water should be taken. One should not even swallow saliva, and if one can do that, as some lamas say, it is very good. Stop speaking, and the ritual should be done with the mind, and the recitation of the Dharani should also be done with the mind, which is the view of the Lama Bodhisattva fathers and sons. That is, in the Sutra of the Six Perfections of the Amoghapasha, after the Dharani of pure morality, it is said, "Having taken this Dharani, having taken the eight-branch fasting, without speaking, remember it twenty-one times." This is the meaning of it. In general, it is good to enter the Tantras, but because wisdom and diligence are insufficient, if there are additions or omissions in the Dharani during mental recitation, that is not good, so one should avoid additions and omissions and recite purely in a low voice, I think it is good. Furthermore, in the pure translation of the Minor Tantras, it says, "Recite without uttering other words." In addition, in the Dharani of morality, after the above statement, it says, "Then recite the essence of the Amoghapasha." This is also consistent with the general and not contradictory. In any case, the root of all vows is the mind, so one should be extremely respectful to the Lama and the Buddha, have love and compassion for sentient beings, and not let the mind be distracted by the appearance of the deity and the sound of the Dharani mantra, these are very important. The next day is the fasting of thanksgiving.

Having taken the vows of fasting, perform another ritual once, and then begin to practice. Even if one is a householder, on that day, one should remain in pure conduct in a peaceful manner. Thus, the ritual of fasting, through sixteen aspects, with complete preliminary, main, and concluding parts, taking it seven times without interruption, becomes the approach retreat of accomplishment, empowered to accomplish all the activities of mantras, as explained in the Chim Commentary on the Meaningful Net. When bestowing the vows of fasting on others, one must also first complete such an approach retreat, as it is the lineage of the speech of the previous lamas. The benefits of this practice of Great Compassion combined with the purification practice are inconceivable, which can be understood from the general and specific aspects of the outer and inner tantras. Thus, merely hearing the name "Noble Avalokiteśvara" once, one is placed near the irreversible ground, praised in one voice by all the Buddhas and their sons. Therefore, this method of practice, mantra, and the precious and difficult-to-find leisure and endowment, at the time of obtaining it, in order to take its essence, why not diligently practice with the three doors in this manner? This accomplishes the true essence of enlightenment, which transcends samsara and nirvana, praised again and again by the Buddhas. Not to mention the accomplishment of the power of higher realms, such as the mere result of peace and temporary heavens. Therefore, this is a Dharma that requires little effort, is of great meaning, and is good in effect, a common and wonderful Dharma that includes the Vinaya, Sutra, and Tantra. With reverence, I have strived to speak of it, may all beings attain the state of Avalokiteśvara through this merit. Thus, this practice manual related to the purification practice of the eleven-faced Noble Avalokiteśvara, from a long time ago, was repeatedly requested by many virtuous friends who hold the saffron robes, and also repeatedly supplicated by many householder Bodhisattva lineage individuals, in order to clearly explain the oral tradition and practice of the previous lamas, in front of the main object of refuge of Wang Le Dechen Monastery in Tibet—the eleven-faced Avalokiteśvara image, the mind treasure of Lhatsun Nagaraja, blessed by the venerable Jowo Je, made excellently, by the vidyadhara Gyalkhampa Tsewang Norbu, with the glory of the uninterrupted stream of compassion of the Lord of the World, Avalokiteśvara.

Started on the 15th day of the fourth month (spring) of the thirteenth Water Bird year of the Rabjung cycle (year uncertain, likely referring to the time of the 13th Dalai Lama), completed during the first session of the red side's tenth day. Written by the scribe, the monk Sherab Tenzin. Auspicious! Auspicious!
