He also made efforts to search, carrying hundreds and thousands of gold coins, and went to India in the late winter of the Iron Snake year (1161 CE), when he was forty-two years old. As the song says: I, Marpa Chokyi Lodro, spent two of the three lifetimes in India. I studied and contemplated for forty years. Last year was the year of the venomous snake. In the month of miracles, the month of the horse, I, this person, set out on the path. It is said. Although there are different opinions about the meaning of this song, some say he returned from India, and others say he went from Tibet, it is also possible that he arrived in Nepal from India in the year of the snake. It seems certain that he went from Tibet to India at the end of the year of the snake and the beginning of the year of the horse. On the way, it is commonly said that he met Lord Atisha at Nyangto Langpo Sna (now Jiangbo Ri Mountain in Linzhou County, Lhasa). However, in the Lhorong Chojung, it is said that he met him on the way in the direction of Mangyu (now Ali Prefecture), which seems more reasonable. In any case, when he met Atisha, he heard Atisha say that the venerable Naropa had gone to the realm of the Dakinis on the first day of the new year, which made him even more saddened, and he hurried from Nepal to India, where he first met the great Lama Bandepa, who prophesied that he would meet Narotapa. After that, he met the attendant monk Shen Sengge of Narotapa. Then Maitripa, Shiwazangpo, the one adorned with human bones, Prajnyarakshira, Jnyanakara, Arakasiddha, Jayakara, Riripa, Kaparipa, and about thirteen other lamas, each of whom he satisfied with a tsok khorlo (gathering wheel), and each of whom he requested to meet Naropa for a month. All the lamas prophesied that he would meet him, and finally Kasoripa gave permission, saying that he would meet Naropa in eight months and seven days. Thus, disregarding his life, he searched in all directions of Narora, enduring many unbearable hardships, and with special experiences, he first saw the footprints. After that, he prayed for seven days, and the venerable one appeared in the form of a rainbow, vaguely and clearly, and then very clearly, until finally he saw Naropa manifest. He ran to ask for blessings, but he disappeared before he could catch him. There, he saw that the skulls were filled with nectar, blessed by the appearance, and when he prayed, immeasurable nature arose. Again

Due to intense prayer, after seven days, accompanied by the sound of a ḍāmaru, Nāropa appeared in the sky and descended to the ground. After offering prostrations and a maṇḍala to him, he asked what he desired, and he said he wanted to learn Hevajra. Thereupon, Nāropa manifested a maṇḍala, and in one go bestowed the empowerment, tantras, and pith instructions, enabling him to realize the meaning of the empowerment as it is, and dispelling his doubts. When he thought of requesting Cakrasaṃvara and Guhyasamāja again, Nāropa asked, "Do you understand Hevajra?" He replied that he did, and Nāropa said, "That is enough," and then vanished. The translator was disheartened by this, and went about praying in the forests. Nāropa appeared on the top of a banyan tree, singing a vajra song. From then on, Nāropa and the translator gained the confidence of being inseparable. This account is an irrefutable history, with all sources in agreement, and is worthy of belief. Although Nāropa had already gone to the realm of the ḍākinīs, his intense realization of wanting to see Nāropa was unbearable. After enduring many hardships, he finally directly saw Nāropa's non-dual wisdom body, and received empowerment, blessings, acceptance, and prophecy. Therefore, the translator spread throughout India and Nepal with the fame of good fortune and accomplishment, and in this northern land of snow (Tibet), like the sun shining on snow, Nāropa's lineage, the teachings of essential meaning, became extremely widespread. Knowing this, in order to facilitate this special auspicious coincidence, the lords, with great compassion, will undoubtedly fully promote this lineage. In this way, the auspicious coincidence of his Dharma lineage becoming prosperous and flourishing was arranged as it is. This time, he also newly listened to various pith instructions from the previous lamas, mainly Maitrīpa, and accurately completed the previous la zhu tig. As the doha says, "I have been to India three times, this time I earnestly made requests." He probably stayed there for a few years, and many historical accounts say he stayed for twelve years, which seems to be the total of India and Nepal. In total, it seems that he stayed in India for nearly twenty years, and in Nepal for six or seven years. Thus, Jetsun Marpa went to India three times, which is consistent with all reliable sources such as the old documents of Ngok. In some other dohas it says, "I, Marpa the translator",
