It is said that Jetsun Milarepa was born in the Earth Dragon year and 712 years have passed since then. Atisha arrived in Tibet in the Water Horse year, and 700 years have passed since then. Ngok Lotsawa Chenpo was born in the Earth Female Pig year, and 683 years have passed since then. Gampopa Lhaje was born in the Earth Sheep year, and 662 years have passed since then. Dampa Sangye arrived in Dingri (present-day Dingri County, Shigatse Prefecture, Tibet) in the Iron Sheep year, and it should be known that 651 years have passed since then. Thus, concerning the years of birth and death of Marpa and Milarepa, like the unbroken oral tradition from ear to ear of the Kagyu lineage's previous lamas, in order to fulfill the wishes of the great bodhisattva incarnations Rangjung father and son (Rangjung Dorje and his son), the glorious Khachö Wangpo (5th Shamarpa) wanted to elaborate on the seed of remembrance of the doctrine's time. Their intention is very much in line with the Fire Tiger year (the year Rangjung Dorje was born) 'Rampa' and many reliable historical documents of Milarepa and Gampopa, so I firmly believe it and try to clarify it. In general, as Shyijé Ripa said, he had seen 127 biographies of Milarepa, and the lineage of Marpa and Mila became very extensive. However, regarding their biographies, there are many narrators, and the order of the biographies, the similarities and differences in wording, the sameness and difference in meaning, and the various differences are difficult to verify. Some of the contents of the biographies are difficult for even accomplished yogis to understand, while some biographies clearly contain fabrications by later generations. Therefore, based on many reliable ancient books, I have organized the chronological order and the content of the biographies, trying to avoid personal speculation, and have made a brief record here. I hope that fair-minded and intelligent people will think that what I have said is meaningful, rather than unfounded speculation. In addition, the years of birth and death of the contemplative yogis who were very famous at that time and useful for historical research, such as Atisha, Dromtonpa, and Ngok Lotsawa, were determined without error by Je Shyönnu Pal (Wise Youthful Glory) and recorded in the scriptures. Similarly, I have also referred to the statements of Zukhangpa and Bumrampa, scholars of India's Vajrasana Temple, regarding the year Dampa Sangye passed away from India's Vajrasana Temple to Tushita Heaven, and I believe there are no errors, so I have recorded it. The holy lamas of the Kagyu lineage...

This concise account, which is helpful when explaining biographies and calculating the chronology of the teachings, was composed by the yogi Tshewang Norbu, born in the southern part of Kathok, at the great siddha's (Rnga-chen) sacred site of Ljonpa Lung during the autumn harvest season in the Water Dog year (year needs verification). Later, some words were slightly expanded at that place. Again, in the Fire Tiger year of the protector (year needs verification), it was revised at Gandola in Sölung Tsho (srod lung mtshur) in Ü-Tsang (dbU-ru), Tibet. The scribe was Yeshe Peljor (ye shes dpal 'byor). Good! Auspicious! A concise account containing the seeds of the biographies of Marpa, Milarepa, Gampopa, Jowo Rinpoche and his sons, and statements that include the determination of time.
