After taking much, even if I urge myself for my own Dharma, For a while, relying on the form of a superior person, The means of attending to a lama and going to solitude, Not finding it, in a state of laziness and indifference, Until I approached the age of twenty-two, Sometimes I made offerings and served the lama, Sometimes I ran errands for patrons in village ceremonies, Sometimes I mediated disputes among villagers, Sometimes I did a little recitation and practice of the yidam, Sometimes I pretended to benefit beings by giving teachings, For the experience of happiness and suffering, I mostly practiced equanimity. In conduct, I learned how to please the lama and the Three Jewels, Regarding food and wealth, I learned to reduce attachment. I tried to connect any relationship to virtuous deeds, I learned to reduce hypocrisy, deceit, and selfishness. I tried to abandon jealousy arising from greed for gain, No matter how I practiced the Dharma, Due to the habits and bad customs of past mistakes, And because I did not firmly grasp the essence of Dharma, Even though outwardly I pretended to be a practitioner, When I examined my own faults, I myself found that, My mind was stubborn, and the power of the five poisons was strong. Therefore, my practice, a mixture of good and bad, black and white, Became confused, uncertain, and wavering. Like this, without meeting a qualified lama, And without receiving much empowerment and teaching, The sleep of painful nights was mostly disturbed. When I approached the age of twenty-three, Unnecessary thoughts arose from my heart, and I sang this song: Emaho! Think well, Tshewang Norbuwa! This leisure and endowment adorned with eighteen qualities, Is difficult to obtain again and again, only this one time. Could the golden continent return empty-handed? This life is but a fleeting moment, The body is like a dilapidated house about to collapse, The impermanence of speech is like the noise of a marketplace, The impermanence of mind is like clouds in the sky. Uncertain when death will come, for the affairs of this life, There is no need to cling, it is time to let go. The carefully arranged monasteries and seats, Are like autumn flowers, the boasting of children. When I die, the monastery will be left behind, The essence of what I have done is like an illusionary show. Therefore, one should go to a quiet, secluded place, And place the permanent intention on practicing the Dharma. The beautiful objects of body, speech, and mind, If one is too attached, they become the cause of attachment, hatred, and clinging. At the time of death, these will be left behind uselessly.
