It should be done. Regarding the selflessness of phenomena, however all phenomena appear as cause, effect, and essence, when analyzing the cause with the reasoning of Vajra Splinters, all phenomena of things do not arise from the four extremes of self, other, both, and neither, therefore it is established as without cause. When analyzing the phenomena of effects with existence, non-existence, arising, and cessation, since it is unborn, it is established as without desire for results. If the essence of all phenomena is analyzed with one or many, it is not established, therefore the essence is well established as emptiness. Furthermore, all phenomena of cause, effect, and essence are established as emptiness by the reasoning of great dependent origination. As it is said, "What is empty and dependently arisen, is one in meaning in the Middle Way." According to the assertions of the Samkhya school and others, the cause arises from being the nature of the effect. If there is no effect in the cause, then it should not arise. If it is said that the cause already exists as the nature of the effect, then it does not need to arise, because it is already established as the nature of the effect in the causal stage. They say that what is not clear in the causal stage arises to become clear. If that is the case, then if it is asserted that the clear thing arises later even though it did not exist before, then it contradicts the vow that what did not exist before should not arise. If it is necessary to arise even though it exists as its own nature, then only seeds will endlessly arise, so there will be no opportunity for sprouts to arise. Furthermore, if the nature of the earth and sprout are one, then in the sprout stage, there should also be the rough appearance of the seed. Or, just as there is no seed in the sprout stage, there should also be no green color of the sprout, because the sprout is one with the seed. If it is said that a different sprout arises from a different seed, then darkness should also arise from fire, because different things arise from different things. They say, it is not pervasive, because a sprout arises from a seed, because it appears that it arises from it, and because it has the power to produce it, and because it is the nature of things that it arises from it. Answer: Because the reasons for delusion have been held for a long time. Just appearing in that way does not establish it as valid cognition. And also, power, there is no possibility of power for what has already arisen, and the nature of what has not arisen also has no power. Such words refute it. Again, if it is said to be the nature of things, if it is the nature of things, then there is no self.

If it is to be perfectly established by reason in this way, then it is not a natural law either. There are other faults as well: in the stage of the sprout, there is no seed that has become other; in the stage of the seed, there is no sprout that has become other; therefore, saying "other arises from other" is just a name. In this case of taking the noble one's meditative equipoise as a measure, worldly perception does not cause harm. As the scripture says: "Neither the eye, nor the ear, nor the nose are valid measures; neither the tongue, nor the body, nor the mind are valid measures. If these senses were valid, what use would the path of the noble ones be to anyone?" Some also say that it arises from both self and other. For example, Maitreya arises from the life force that exists in other lifetimes, so it is self-arising; and it also arises from the semen and blood of this life's parents, so it also arises from other, therefore it arises from both self and other. If you say so, just as butter does not come from squeezing each grain of sand, so also squeezing two or more together will not produce butter. If the result cannot arise from self and other individually, then the combination of self and other cannot produce a result either. If it arises without a cause, then farmers would not need to buy or search for seeds, or plow, etc., in order to harvest crops in the autumn, which is too much. If it arises without depending on a cause, then there should also be various flower gardens in the sky. Or all things will become completely invisible, like flowers in the sky. Therefore, if we examine the cause, there is nothing that can be established as a truly established cause. If we examine the result, if the result exists from the beginning, then what need does it have for a producer? Because it is already established. If you say that the result does not exist from the beginning, then it cannot be produced, because what is the cause? Because things and non-things are directly contradictory. For example, even if hundreds of thousands of causes are gathered, they cannot turn a rabbit's horn into a thing. So, how does the result appear from the cause? If you realize emptiness like dreams and reflections, you will not be bound by the merely appearing samsara. Therefore, knowing the mere appearance of emptiness is not to be negated, as it says in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Here, what should be averted is the thought of truth, which has become the cause of suffering." Therefore, for anything that has become a result, there is nothing that is truly established.
