Having remembered the mind of enlightenment and the methods of mind training, one must make one's own mind workable. As the venerable Nagarjuna said, "What need is there to repeatedly beseech freedom from timidity? This beneficial instruction is of utmost importance. Please tame your mind, for the Blessed One has well said that the mind is the root of Dharma." And as the glorious Geshe Rinpoche said, "The rain of eighty-four thousand Dharmas falls only on this field of the mind." And as the son of the Victorious Ones, Shantideva, said, "What is the use of many ascetic practices other than guarding the mind?" As it is said, the root of all good and evil is the mind, and if this mind becomes stubborn and attached to the body and possessions as self, not to mention attaining Buddhahood, one will not even attain liberation. First, even if one cherishes the body and so on in this way, one will inevitably be separated from and abandon them someday. Thinking about these things, one should repeatedly familiarize oneself with the mind of giving away the three bases of attachment to others. It is necessary to familiarize oneself with the mind of giving now because it has supreme necessity. Then, having meditated on equality and exchange of self and others, and having tamed this mind with the samadhi of calm abiding, one must then meditate on selflessness and emptiness as the antidote to the two obscurations, even if it means uprooting the root of existence. To do this, one must first establish the way of it through the wisdom of hearing and thinking, and one must generate a certainty from within about the meaning of selflessness. As Jamgon Mipham said, "Meditation must not be separated from certainty." Therefore, to speak briefly about the way of establishing the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena, in general, from the point of view of clinging to "I" or self, all afflictions such as attachment and all suffering arise. As it says in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, "All afflictions and faults arise from clinging to the aggregates. Those with wisdom see that it arises from the view of clinging to the aggregates." And as it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "If there is a self, then there is the thought of other. From self and other arise attachment and hatred. From these and their connections, all faults arise." Thus, if one clings to a self, one is attached to the self. Because of attachment, one wishes the self to encounter happiness, and because of fear, one wishes the self to be separated from suffering, because of deluded

The place of rebirth that I grasp, from that, because of having attachment to self, it is not that other beings lead me, but because I want to abandon suffering and obtain happiness, I completely take the inferior place. Thus, as the Buddha said, the root of birth in samsara is self-grasping, which is well established by reason as well. Like grasping a flowered rope as a snake, grasping what is without self as having self is completely mistaken, because just as there is no snake on the rope, there is also absolutely no I or self on this aggregate. Thus it is established, even if we think about the external body, as it says in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Teeth, hair, and nails are not self," etc. Even if we think about the inner mind, the six consciousnesses are also not self. As it is said, and also the things that arise from the mind are not self, because they are of the nature of being many and impermanent. Furthermore, the past and future minds are not self, because they do not exist. The present arising mind is also not self, because it ceases in an instant and is impermanent and unstable. Because there is no self, grasping that there is a self is completely mistaken, so the wisdom that realizes no-self uproots self-grasping from its foundation. To go into more detail, even when analyzing self and aggregates with the reasoning of the sevenfold chariot, there is no self that is different from the aggregates, and the aggregates and self are not one either. Just as a wheel hub relies on spokes, the self does not rely on the aggregates, and likewise the aggregates do not rely on the self. Just as Devadatta has wealth or has form, it is also not a possession of being different and one, because the self is not found. The shape and collection of the aggregates are also not self, so if we search in seven ways, there is no self. Like mistaking a stump for a person and mistaking a flowered rope for a snake, the mind that grasps what is without self as having self is completely mistaken. Thus, having determined that there is no I or self, the wisdom that realizes the emptiness of no-self, as Dharmakirti said: "Because the view of emptiness and what contradicts it, its own nature is completely established as being in opposition to all faults." As it is said, because it contradicts the root of all afflictions, self-grasping, and all the afflictions produced by self-grasping, therefore, by repeatedly familiarizing ourselves with no-self, we will eventually manifest the reality of no-self.
