When the very nature of the ground manifests, the objects to be attained and abandoned, referred to as Buddhas and sentient beings, are primordially self-liberated. In short, by leaving whatever appears unadulterated in its natural state, without losing that state which is free from all that is to be placed and the one who places, that alone is known as meditation.

As it is said, do not lose that state of groundlessness and great openness, but rest in that very state. At the beginning, when afflictions and thoughts arise, immediately recognize them, do not follow them, but let them rest in their own place. In general, this staring is not very close to the true meaning. For superior practitioners and superior intellects, whatever arises cannot remain, because it itself is also the nature of reality, so there is no need for a method of looking. In general, it is extremely important to generate a genuine certainty that the mind and thoughts are primordially unborn, groundless, and rootless. In practice, once there is grasping and focus, it is not the path of Dzogchen. If any experiences such as emptiness experiences and clarity experiences arise, if you do not cling to them as real and regard them as insignificant, they will become clear. Now, this mind of your own, the arising appearance, the ceasing appearance, the abiding appearance, and thoughts such as right and wrong, good and bad, doubt, etc., these are faults of meditation. Having established this mind's place of origin, place of dwelling, and place of going as groundless, and being certain that there is no arising and ceasing, when you realize groundlessness and rootlessness, you have arrived at the nature of mind or the level of awareness. As it is said, the mind is the groundless and rootless great city of Nirvana. In general, there is a great difference between the mind as a path and wisdom as a path. If thoughts nourish thoughts, that is the mind as a path; if thoughts themselves disappear into groundlessness and rootlessness, that is awareness or wisdom as a path. Furthermore, do not usually follow the thoughts of the three times, but simply relax the ordinary consciousness of the present moment, without distraction and without fabrication. Even if thoughts move, do not negate or affirm them, but regard them as objects of observation. If you leave the observing mind in its natural state, it will naturally dissolve without a trace. At that time, abandon all fabrication, negation, affirmation, contraction, and expansion. Do not lose the self-nature of simply understanding and being aware. As it is said, "Water and awareness, if left alone, become clear." By resting in the state of reality, everything is naturally liberated. The great accomplished Sherab Yaphel said, "If you do not apply effort when thoughts arise, you will realize your primordial ground." Since it is said, "If you do not apply effort when thoughts arise," then if you think, "I am distracted," do not regret the previous thoughts, nor have regrets such as "I am distracted."

Therefore, if you abide in the state of not losing your natural state, there is nothing else besides that. The Omniscient Lama said: When conceptual thoughts arise, cherish gazing; when you make a decision, cherish letting go on the spot; when there is nothing to meditate on, cherish meditating; guarding against distraction is my heartfelt advice. As Guru Rinpoche said: When gross thoughts arise, look for the abbot within; there is no need to deliberately accept or reject, leave it in its own place. In general, it is said that view abides like a mountain king, meditation abides like an ocean, conduct abides like pith instructions, and fruition abides like awareness. However, in reality, when you do not make any modifications or refutations to this present awareness and leave it in its own place, there is no such thing as 'this' that can be identified. There is a clear awareness that is unobstructed, free from all edges and centers, and completely transparent. If you maintain this continuity, then view, meditation, conduct, and fruition are all inseparable from it. As it is said, realize the awareness of the Dharmakaya. These four abidings all converge on the essential point of maintaining the state of the wisdom of awareness. In general, in the Dzogchen self-liberation path, do not prevent arising, do not fabricate abiding, and place the awareness that is beyond the objects of grasping and wandering thoughts, the non-duality of arising and abiding, in a clear and unwavering state. Awareness has two aspects: the abiding aspect and the clear aspect. As Minling Terchen, Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa, Khenpo Ngawang Chökyi Rinpoche, and others have said, one should abide in the abiding aspect and cultivate the clear aspect. If you cultivate the abiding aspect, it is like scale forming on a bucket. If you become attached to an experience, it will in turn obscure you. Pleasant experiences are associated with desire, clear experiences are associated with hatred, and non-conceptual experiences are associated with delusion, and therefore you will be scattered. Attachment to these will gradually lead you to fall into the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. Therefore, the clear aspect of awareness is the clear, transparent, and naked state of awareness. If you do not lose this state and maintain it in all activities, that is sufficient. From emptiness, appearance arises; from appearance, clarity arises; from clarity, it is a rootless, vast expanse. Therefore, do not fabricate, but rest naturally. Padampa Sangye said: Do not fabricate, rest naturally; fabricating is like getting off a horse and riding a donkey. Therefore, if you fabricate and meditate, it will not accord with reality and will become a wrong view. Next is the unindicated ignorance.
