Incidentally, even during the time when the Buddhist teachings widely spread in Tibet through the three, Khenpo, Lopon, and Chö, they placed their reliance solely on the Sangha. As the great Orgyen (Padmasambhava) said, "The Bodhisattva is not the foundation of the teachings; without the Sangha, there is no Buddha's teaching; therefore, the Sangha is said to be the supreme jewel." Thus, the root of the teachings is placed in the hearts of individuals who are learned and virtuous. Other than that, external temples, internal banners and offerings, and other wonderful things like Cham dances and music are merely ornaments to beautify the teachings. In the past, the arrangements and wonderful implements of practice in the great monasteries in the Rebkong area were indeed beautiful and magnificent at that time. However, at that time, as for Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok of Sertha and Khenpo Chokyap, they were nothing more than two Acho beggars in front of Changma Gar and Bopa Tulku. But now, how widely have they both spread the teachings! The implements of the great monasteries are just that. Even now, if one has tens of thousands of paper money, one can buy all sorts of wonderful banners and offerings from shops. But even if one goes with hundreds of thousands of money, one cannot buy a humble, learned, and virtuous Dharma practitioner who is consistent inside and out. Therefore, since the root of the teachings depends on the Sangha of learned and virtuous individuals, all lamas and students must pay attention to this alone. He repeatedly said this. In the early part of his life, he diligently studied the five major treatises of Sutra, including cultural knowledge, and all the empowerments and explanations of Tantra, mastering them in a short time. Then, when the precious Buddhist teachings declined, and ordinary people could not even hold a rosary, he thoroughly studied Sutra, Tantra, and cultural knowledge. He and his uncle, Khenpo Sherab, next to a small stove, disguised as a place to put firewood, made a mud box with a hollow inside that could hold some pages of books and wooden boards. When travelers came, they...

Furthermore, he continuously studied scriptures, even until the moment of blowing out the lamp. He would sleep only a little at night, spending his time solely on recitation and reading, transforming all unfavorable adversities into favorable aids. Especially through the great deeds of compassion. As it is said: When the vessel and its contents are filled with sin, Transform adverse conditions into the path to enlightenment. Thus, he transformed adverse circumstances into aids for enlightenment. As mentioned before, details such as residing for twenty-two years have been thoroughly described. Thereafter, he rekindled the dying embers of the doctrine from the depths, engaging in unparalleled virtuous activities of upholding, preserving, and propagating, which have also been briefly mentioned in conjunction with the previous years. Furthermore, during those times, starting from the manner of performing purely altruistic deeds, I will again briefly recount. That is, when visiting monasteries in various regions, due to his advanced age, even when movement and sitting were difficult, he would spend the entire day busy with teaching the Dharma, providing refuge for the living and the dead. He would have letters written and submitted from various directions, and at night, between the first and second hour, he would successively grant the vows of novice and full ordination. Then, after midnight, relying on the light of the lamp, he would examine each of the prayer requests and supplications, reciting prayers, offering body, speech, and mind, offering mandalas, and engaging in his regular practices. To speak without any exaggeration, he would only rest for about two hours each night in today's time. This is according to the true accounts of his early life, and from his later life, when Khenpo Thubten Monlam served him, he personally said that Khenpo Rinpoche usually slept two or three hours after midnight and then woke up at four o'clock. He also said, "When you get old, you can't sleep, once I wake up, I can't sleep anymore." Similarly, earlier, when we, master and servant, were at Dzogchen Shri Sing, he would pretend to sleep for the first and second hour to show us, and soon after we fell asleep, he would wake up. Those merits concerning life and death.
