I meditate on immeasurable equanimity. When meditating in this way, even if the mind does not want to leave, it does not follow the past, does not welcome the future, does not continue the present thoughts, and without making any adjustments, abides in its natural state. This is the samadhi of equanimity. Or one may want to continue, or one may observe. Meditating on shamatha by alternating between observation and abiding in this way. The continuation of the session is the same as before. Then, in the breaks between sessions, focusing on a sentient being with attachment and aversion, like remembering the kindness of one's mother, etc., may the attachment and aversion in this being's mindstream be separated. Thinking how wonderful it would be if they were separated, thinking that I will do this separation, and thinking that one must pray to the Three Jewels for this separation. Then, meditating on objectless equanimity, the bodies of oneself and others are particles, the mind is a series of momentary arising and ceasing, appearing and not remaining for a second moment, ultimately without inherent existence, and conventionally, emptiness is not nothing, because dependent arising does not cease, therefore, gaining certainty that emptiness and unceasing dependent arising are the same, and then abiding without any adjustments, this is the method for developing vipassana. Furthermore, in all the breaks between sessions, focusing on those sentient beings who are fighting with attachment and aversion, thinking, may the attachment and aversion in these beings' mindstreams be separated at all times and in all ways, which is related to aspiration; thinking, how wonderful it would be if they were separated, which is related to longing; thinking, I will do this separation, which is related to commitment, that is, having three connections. One must also repeatedly think about the fourth point, praying to the Three Jewels. In this way, even if one meditates on good equanimity during the session and some changes occur in the mindstream, if one does not think about it during the breaks between sessions, one will fall back into the traces of the previous bad self-nature. For example, iron that is burned red in a fire, if it is taken out of the fire and placed on the ground, it will become black, so meditating during the breaks between sessions is more important than meditating during the session. After meditating in this way, during the breaks between sessions, one must also let go of hatred towards enemies, let go of attachment towards relatives, and treat everyone equally, like one's parents. The second is to meditate on loving-kindness. On the basis of equanimity, pacifying attachment and aversion, and treating everyone equally, like one's parents, this is meditating on loving-kindness. At the beginning of the session, one must cut off coarse thoughts and meditate, and at the end, one must think.

One should meditate on all sentient beings. First, visualize your root mother in front of you, as if she were alive, or actually visualize her aggregates, elements, and sense bases. Now, this mother has done the kindness of a mother to me not just once, but countless times, and one should know the beginning and end of the mother, etc. Now, remembering the kindness of the mother, I am not like hail falling from the sky, nor like a flower growing from the ground, but rather I went through nine months and ten days, etc., and the mother nurtured my body and life. The essence of the food that the mother ate, like leaving soot on a butter lamp, was transmitted from the mother's own navel, nurturing my body and life, remember this kindness. Then, at the time of birth, all the joints of the mother, except for the bones in her mouth, loosened. For seven days, even thinking of sexual intercourse would be frightening, experiencing such suffering. The child experienced suffering as if being pulled from an iron hook. At the time of birth, if one were to die, without even taking a breath, etc., if one were to look back from there, one would not know from which of the six realms one came. If one were to look forward, one would not know which place one would reach, so at that time, if it were not for the kind mother taking care of me, I would have died. The mother first wiped away the fetal matter, washed me with warm milk, cut the umbilical cord, and prevented me from dying, etc., remember the kindness of giving life. Then, remember the kindness of giving food, first the sweet breast milk, etc. Then, the mother accompanied me with loving thoughts, as if placing her own heart in her palm, and nurtured me with beneficial thoughts, from etc. to knowing and understanding, remember the kindness of nurturing me and teaching me about the world. Then, remember the kindness from the aspect of Dharma, etc. Therefore, the field of benefiting, the dwelling, the bedding, the utensils, etc., were all given to me by the mother. The field of cultivating loving-kindness is also this kind mother, because the mother has shown me such kindness. I have not shown such kindness to the mother before, and if the old mother gives some teachings and advice in worldly matters, but one does not listen, and says, "Old woman, senile, you will not die," and strikes the hand of the benefactor with a stone, it is because of not remembering kindness. Now, in order to remember kindness and repay kindness, if one thinks about what this mother wants, she wants happiness, she wants food, clothing, shelter, utensils, etc., she wants the happiness of this life, and all the happiness of gods and humans in the higher realms.
