Because there is no cause, it is impossible for mind to arise from the inner sense faculties, just as it is impossible for a child to be born without a father. Then, does mind arise between the sense faculties and their objects? No, it does not. Because between the sense faculties and their objects, there is nothing other than the dust of light during the day and the dust of darkness during the night. And these two dusts of light and darkness, the dust itself is of a nature without parts, so it is impossible for mind to arise from that. Thus, when examining the mind, it is like something that does not exist. However, because there is a place where the mind stays after it arises, one might think that the mind has a place to stay. But that is also not the case. Just as a virgin's womb has never given birth to a child, so there is no place to stay in between, so there is no need to examine this. But if one still thinks there is a mind, then it needs to be examined. Just as before, examine the six external objects and the six internal sense faculties, and between them, there is no place where the mind stays. Thus, even though the arising and staying of the mind are both absent, one might think that there is ultimately a place of cessation. But that is also not the case. For example, just as a virgin's womb has not given birth to a first child, and there is no place to stay in between, so ultimately there is no death. When examining between the six external objects and the six internal sense faculties, because the atoms are divided into parts, their own nature is not established, so there is also no place of cessation. Thus, even though searching for the three aspects of the mind—arising, staying, and going—one does not find them, if a thought still suddenly arises, one might think that this exists. But it does not. If this mind had a thing, then it is impossible for there to be a thing other than shape and color. When examining whether the mind has a round, square, crescent, triangular, long, short, narrow, flat, or non-flat shape, there is no shape. When examining whether there are colors such as white, yellow, red, and green, there is no color. When examining whether there are forms such as male, female, hermaphrodite, horse, and elephant, no form is established. If one still thinks there is, then looking at all the external objects, the manifest sense faculties, and the inside and outside of the body, can one see the mind? The result is that the mind has no form to be seen. If one listens with the ear, the mind has no sound to be heard. Therefore, the elders of the world say that if the eye has not seen and the ear has not heard, they say it does not exist, and do not say it exists. Therefore, the mind is not established by its own nature. If one still smells with the nose, can one perceive the smell of the mind? Can one taste the flavor of the mind with the tongue?

Look to see if it exists. If you touch the mind all over the body, inside and out, with your hands, and examine whether it exists, it does not, therefore the mind is empty. Furthermore, if you do not examine and investigate in this way, emptiness is nothing at all, but the mind can appear as the unhindered nature of dependent arising. Therefore, emptiness is the mind. Furthermore, emptiness and dependent arising are inseparable, like the moon in water, emptiness is not different from the mind, and the mind is not different from emptiness. From this, generate an unwavering conviction of the fourfold union of emptiness. Then, even if you cannot find it by examining in that way, if you do not examine and investigate, you must draw out a definite understanding of the unhindered nature of dependent arising as the eight similes of illusion. The others are easy to understand. In the case of illusion, for example, the magician Khyungo Pukha, on the wooden sticks and pebbles of illusion, etc., by blessing them with the mantra of illusion, oṃ thibi thibi svāhā (藏文:ཨོཾ་ཐི་བི་ཐི་བི་སྭཱ་ཧཱ།,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ thibi thibi svāhā,汉语字面意思:嗡,提比,提比,梭哈), the appearance of illusion, the appearance of horses and elephants, etc., appears and bewilders the eyes. Also, if you want to destroy the wheel of illusion, by reciting the mantra oṃ mithi mithi svāhā (藏文:ཨོཾ་མི་ཐི་མི་ཐི་སྭཱ་ཧཱ།,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ mithi mithi svāhā,汉语字面意思:嗡,米提,米提,梭哈), the appearance of illusion subsides, and like the appearance of wooden sticks and pebbles, the old magician of ignorance, on the cause—the apprehended and the apprehender—by blessing them with the mantras of the conditions—karma and afflictions—the various appearances of the six kinds of beings, like the appearance of illusion, from the peak of existence down to the vajra hell, arise. For example, that wooden stick and pebble, at the two times when it was not first blessed with a mantra and finally pacified with a mantra, the appearance of illusion does not exist, but in between, it appears depending on conditions. The nature of mind, the essence of the Sugata, in the state of the beginning, the fundamental, unconfused, and also at the time of finally attaining complete enlightenment, the illusory appearance of confusion does not exist. However, due to the sudden cause of confusion, it is confused like an illusion, therefore, think of these confused appearances as the eight similes of illusion, etc., and repeatedly cultivate the practice of alternating examination and abiding. After the session, everything is the same. During the breaks between sessions, look at books and contemplate the distinctions. These are the instructions for entering the path. Second, generating the supreme bodhicitta.
