Second, generating the supreme Bodhicitta. Second, generating the supreme Bodhicitta. Second, concerning the guidance on generating the supreme Bodhicitta, the root of the Great Vehicle. If one's intention is vast, then practicing the Dharma of the lesser vehicle can also transform into the Dharma of the Great Vehicle. For beginners, the reason for distinguishing between the Great and Lesser Vehicles does not lie in the size of the Dharma itself, but in whether or not one possesses relative Bodhicitta. Therefore, relative Bodhicitta is of utmost importance, and one must have a view as a companion. In terms of definitive meaning, the ultimate destination lies in absolute Bodhicitta. One cannot attain the ultimate result with relative Bodhicitta alone. However, at the time of being a beginner, one must have a good intention. If the intention is good, then the grounds and paths are also good; if the intention is bad, then the grounds and paths are also bad. Therefore, if one possesses Bodhicitta, one can traverse the good grounds of the ten Bhumis and the good paths of the five paths. If the intention is bad, one must rely on the bad grounds of the three realms and nine grounds, and one must rely on the bad paths of the five realms of existence. Therefore, for beginners, it does not depend on the view, nor does it depend on meditation, but it depends on Bodhicitta, and it does not depend on anything else. Even Hearers and Solitary Realizers have realized the view. As Sakya Pandita said: "The Hearers meditate on emptiness, and its result is cessation." Thus, it is only through Bodhicitta and the accumulation of merit that one attains Buddhahood. Therefore, the New Schools say that relative mind generation is most important, and the Nyingma School says that among the three: provisional meaning, merely definitive, and definitive meaning, one must first have relative Bodhicitta. In merely definitive meaning, one must unite both relative and absolute Bodhicitta. Hearers and Solitary Realizers have not realized the view of the three greatnesses. In definitive meaning, the ultimate destination is absolute Bodhicitta. As Nagarjuna said, Bodhicitta is the Great Vehicle, etc. Glorious Chandrakirti, in the Entering [the Middle Way], to establish the ultimate one vehicle, only absolute Bodhicitta can establish the ultimate one vehicle, but relative Bodhicitta cannot establish the ultimate one vehicle. Such a good intention, Bodhicitta, is...

Because evil thoughts will not arise, only good thoughts will arise. So, there are three ways to generate good thoughts: cultivate the four immeasurables, generate the supreme Bodhicitta, and uphold the vows of aspiration and practice. First, one must cultivate the four immeasurables. If one does not cultivate them, one will not abandon the intention to seek one's own benefit, and if one only seeks one's own benefit, then whether from the perspective of worldly or Dharma matters, there is no example of achieving success by satisfying one's own desires. Now, measuring with direct perception, the kings, ministers, and powerful people of this world, those who are obsessed with their own desires, will eventually fall into a place more miserable than this, and will only lead themselves and others to ruin. From the perspective of Dharma, those Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who only seek their own benefit cannot attain the qualities of a Bodhisattva, nor can they attain the qualities of the fruit of the Buddha, all of which stems from selfishness. Therefore, now one should not only think about satisfying one's own desires, but one must generate Bodhicitta in one's mind. As Shantideva said: May that jewel, the Bodhi-mind, arise in those in whom it has not yet arisen; and may it never decline in those in whom it has arisen, but go on increasing further and further. Here it says, first, the jewel of Bodhicitta refers to the wish that all sentient beings may attain Buddhahood. The way to generate Bodhicitta that has not yet arisen is to cultivate the four immeasurables. The way to prevent it from declining and to make it increase further and further is to generate the supreme Bodhicitta and to learn its precepts. Therefore, for Bodhicitta that has not yet arisen, the way to generate it, and for that which has arisen, the way to prevent it from declining, and to make it increase further and further, if one wants to explain it extensively, it is the four immeasurables; moderately, it is loving-kindness and compassion; if briefly, one must cultivate only compassion. Like this, for the Bodhicitta that has not yet arisen, the way to generate it is the four immeasurables, immeasurable, the four Brahma-viharas, the four abodes of Brahma, the four Brahma-leading, etc. The cause of arising is the four, such as loving-kindness, and the object and mind are not immeasurable, but are cultivated by cutting them off separately. The reason why these four are not called immeasurable is that the four, such as loving-kindness, in short, are not seized by the mind of renunciation, not seized by the mind of Bodhicitta, not seized by the view of emptiness, not seized by the wisdom of realizing selflessness, so they are called Brahma-viharas. For example, an object of focus like the good-hearted old woman.
