Just like dividing land for children, thinking "Are my children happy and well?" etc., these are (the four immeasurables). They are the four immeasurables that lead to the path of omniscience. That is, the four immeasurables that are the first of the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment during the path stage, and the four immeasurables of the Buddha during the fruition stage. Its object of focus is immeasurable, the wisdom of its aspect is immeasurable, and its result is also immeasurable, hence it is called immeasurable. Although from the order of explaining the scriptures, compassion is mentioned first, from the perspective of pith instructions, if one does not first cultivate equanimity, the others will be reborn in the Brahma realm, so one must first cultivate equanimity. That is, wishing all sentient beings to have happiness and its causes is the nature, characteristic, or aspect of loving-kindness. Wishing all sentient beings to be free from suffering and its causes is the nature, characteristic, or aspect of compassion. Wishing all sentient beings never to be separated from happiness is the nature, characteristic, or aspect of joy. Wishing all sentient beings to be free from attachment and aversion is the nature, characteristic, or aspect of equanimity. Among these, there are two types: the immeasurable with focus and the immeasurable without focus. When cultivating the immeasurable with focus, one must combine the object of focus and the aspect. First, the object of focus for loving-kindness is: May all sentient beings, like mother sentient beings filling the sky, have happiness and the causes of happiness. That is, the object of focus is sentient beings who do not have happiness, and the aspect is wishing them to have happiness and its causes. Compassion is: the object of focus is sentient beings who are suffering, and the aspect is wishing them to be free from suffering and its causes. Joy is: the object of focus is sentient beings who have happiness and its causes, and the aspect is wishing them not to be separated from that happiness. Equanimity is: the object of focus is one's own attachment and aversion and the attachment and aversion of others, and the aspect is wishing these to be pacified, and after pacifying the mind of attachment and aversion, hoping to benefit them. Like these four immeasurables, one must combine the object of focus and the aspect to cultivate them. The immeasurable without focus, for beginners, one must cultivate the mind with eight illusions such as illusion and dreams. If one is realized, because "non-conceptual wisdom accomplishes all actions," one must cultivate the power of samadhi, such as loving-kindness and compassion.

Now, to meditate on the immeasurable, if one does not first train in equanimity, the immeasurable qualities such as loving-kindness will not arise. There are two types of meditation: analytical meditation and stabilizing meditation. Loving-kindness and the samadhi of loving-kindness, compassion and the samadhi of compassion, joy and the samadhi of joy, equanimity and the samadhi of equanimity. These are the meditations on calm abiding (shamatha) out of the two types of meditation, calm abiding and insight (vipassana). Among them, there are two types of meditation: the meditation according to the scriptures and the meditation according to the instructions. Here, following the latter, it is the same as all the preliminaries of a session. In the main part, contemplate that your enemy is on your right and your friend is on your left. First, generate strong attachment and aversion towards your enemy and friend. Then, you must contemplate from the perspective of the three times. Like this, the enemy and friend, together with yourself, in the course of experiencing birth and death, there was no time when they were not parents, relatives, friends, or loved ones. Therefore, at that time, they gave immeasurable benefits and protected from immeasurable harm. They are relatives who gave benefits. Now, it is only you who unilaterally considers them as enemies, but they may not necessarily consider me as an enemy. Even if they consider me as an enemy, in times of fighting, etc., there is a possibility of gaining courage and victory, becoming a cause for spreading fame, or they do not consider me as an enemy, or even if they consider me as an enemy, there will be other mediators who reconcile, understand each other, and thus become relatives, even becoming better and closer relatives than before. Besides that, it is also possible for both sides to say to each other, "You are not easy, and I am not easy. Let's not do things like before anymore." Or reconcile through wealth, or reconcile through words, thereby reconciling with each other and becoming relatives. From the perspective of Dharma, the enemy is the cause of robbery, because of the cause of robbery, one encounters the Dharma. If such a cause arises, now I am a Bodhisattva, a child of the Buddhas. Giving alms for a hundred years is not as good as keeping precepts for one day. Keeping precepts for a hundred years is not as good as meditating on patience for one day. All the names and excellent marks of the Buddha are obtained through patience, and the object of meditating on patience is the enemy. Therefore, if one can practice patience, the enemy has given help, so they are not an enemy. In the future, this enemy will also become a relative.
