Cutting off the lesser virtues of the two, the mind's supreme joy in virtue is diligence. The means for diligence to arise is to remember the benefits of virtue and the faults of sin. For example, the benefits of the Sutra King of Precious Gems, the benefits of eating poison, the purification of uninterrupted karma, the inability to be destroyed by anger, and other benefits, the benefits of taking refuge, and the benefits of the mind of enlightenment. If one generates the mind of enlightenment in this way, the name and meaning will change, and like the example of a corpse-carrying hero, one will suppress the determined sins. Like the example of the fire at the end of the kalpa, one will uproot the undetermined sins. Like the example of the fruit of a tree, the benefit of the aspiration mind that the fruit will not be exhausted. Not only does the fruit increase, but it also causes the cause to increase more and more, such as the benefit of the entering mind of enlightenment. One must remember these and initiate diligence. The divisions include armor-like diligence and so on. The first is that one must generate a vast mind that no worldly person has ever remembered. Just as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have accumulated, matured, and purified like an ocean for as many great kalpas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, I will accumulate them in every single moment. One must generate a great armor-like mind. Also, since all actions are imitations, just as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have perfected, matured, and purified, I will accumulate them in the same way. When one hears the biographies of how the former Vidyadharas practiced austerities and so on, one must think that if I cannot surpass them, I cannot do less than them. Also, until all sentient beings have not attained the state of Buddhahood, I will teach the Great Vehicle Dharma to each and every sentient being, causing them to generate the mind of enlightenment, and I must strive for the means of applying the Bodhisattva's training for kalpas, but I will not generate even a moment of weariness. This is the antidote to laziness, self-deprecation, and laziness. In short, like the many oceans mentioned in the Sutra of the Aspiration of the Noble Excellent Conduct, and the phrase "In all lifetimes, also in samsara," it is as vast as the edge of the sky, and it lasts as long as samsara is not empty.
