Sa. The root of exchanging self and others is to give benefits and victories to sentient beings, and to take losses and failures upon oneself. This is Bodhicitta, and it requires two aspects to be complete. Taking with great compassion means focusing on sentient beings with compassion, which is the first aspect. Giving with great love means focusing on complete enlightenment with wisdom, therefore there are four points. First, changing the way of clinging, which means considering all sentient beings as oneself, regarding the three higher realms as the upper part of the body, and the three lower realms as the lower part of the body, clinging to this. Or, considering all sentient beings as my mother, and I am the son, therefore clinging to all sentient beings as my mother. Second, changing the way of cherishing, which means abandoning the thought of cherishing oneself, and now cherishing all sentient beings, regarding them as close relatives, regarding them with joy, regarding them as necessary, regarding them as indispensable. Third, exchanging happiness and suffering, previously attributing all benefits and victories to oneself, attributing all losses and failures to others, taking all warmth upon oneself, giving all cold to others, but now from this day on, giving all benefits and victories to others, taking all losses and failures upon oneself, giving all warmth to others, taking all cold upon oneself. In short, giving all happiness and pleasant things to other sentient beings, and taking all the sufferings of others upon oneself. Continue to practice wind horse etc. as before. Clinging to self where there is no self, clinging to 'I' where there is no 'I', this is a meaningless clinging. My mind is a wandering consciousness like the gods of previous lives, and if we consider the cause of the body, it is the cause of good and bad deeds from previous lives, and the wind-mind entering between the sperm and blood of parents, therefore, this mind is also the mind of another. This body is also the body of another, but it is clung to as 'I', therefore, clinging to 'I' in the past, present and future, has been habitual since beginningless time, therefore, the favorable conditions of the eight worldly dharmas, namely gain, praise, fame, and good reputation, are attributed to oneself, and benefits and victories are attributed to oneself, while losses and failures are given to others. The unfavorable conditions of the eight worldly dharmas, namely not gaining, not praising, no fame, and no good reputation, are attributed to others. Because of these faults, we are still in samsara until now.

Because I have lost my way. Now, I cannot do that anymore, I have understood, realized, and seen the fault of pursuing my own interests. Understanding self as other, understanding other as self, placing self in the place of others, regarding others as self, giving benefit and victory to others, and taking loss and defeat upon oneself. If done in this way, by the kindness of these sentient beings, one will be able to obtain a human body endowed with the eighteen freedoms and advantages in all lifetimes, and ultimately attain the state of perfect and complete enlightenment. Because of being accustomed to this self-cherishing attitude, due to its faults, from beginningless time until now, I have been wandering, and I will still have to wander endlessly. Therefore, one must contemplate the benefits of cherishing others and the faults of cherishing oneself. Now, one must spur on the horse of speech and strive to practice: When happy, may I dedicate the happiness to all beings; may benefit and happiness fill the sky; when suffering, may I take on the suffering of others; may the ocean of suffering dry up. And: May the suffering of beings equal to space, together with its causes, be completely severed, and may it ripen in my continuum; may all my benefit, happiness, and virtuous accumulations be attained by all beings who have not yet attained enlightenment, and may they ultimately attain Buddhahood. These words, in all activities such as eating, sleeping, walking, and staying, must be practiced with speech. Also, regarding the so-called three realms, three poisons, and three roots of virtue, the two causes and effects of happiness, the two causes and effects of suffering, and especially if there are violations of vows, etc., one must abandon all unpleasant things related to these, and Bodhisattvas, with skillful means, must transform everything into the path. That is, if the two causes and effects of happiness arise, one should transform them into the nature of Bodhicitta as the path, and give both the causes and effects of happiness with great love; if the two causes and effects of suffering arise, one should accept them with great compassion, not allowing them to become obstacles on the path to enlightenment, and strive to transform both happiness and suffering into the nature of the path. That is, give the two causes and effects of happiness to all sentient beings, and abandon the four favorable conditions of the eight worldly concerns; take the two causes and effects of suffering upon oneself, and accept the four unfavorable conditions of the eight worldly concerns. So-called reversing, is from the discomfort one feels, starting from a small suffering like a headache, up to bearing all sentient beings' three realms of existence in samsara.
