If one has Bodhicitta, that is sufficient for practicing Bodhi. If not, it is called a failed seed. Among these, there are two types: the naturally abiding lineage and the expanding lineage. The first is the wisdom of the Tathagatagarbha that exists in the continuum of all sentient beings. The expanding lineage is the conventional Bodhicitta. For attaining Buddhahood, the naturally abiding lineage is the cause, and the expanding lineage is the condition, so it is like a seed. When such a mind arises in the continuum, as mentioned above, the benefit of the transformation of name and meaning is that all virtuous roots are transformed into the Mahayana, like the benefit of the fruit of an edible tree. All virtuous roots not grasped by Bodhicitta are exhausted after experiencing the fruit of happiness only once, like the fruit of an aquatic plant, which is an extraordinary benefit. These three benefits are like this: even if one does not offer a small piece of butter lamp, if one offers it with the aim of attaining Buddhahood, then upwards, the number of qualities of the Buddha, and downwards, the number of sentient beings, will cause the virtuous roots to increase more and more. If the precious Bodhicitta arises in the continuum of someone who has accumulated definite sins, i.e., the five heinous crimes, then one will not need to go to the lower realms, just like dropping a silk bag on the ground. For indefinite sins, such as killing people, hobbling horses, handing over ashes and smoke after a house fire, all sins are destroyed in the instant that Bodhicitta arises in the continuum, like the fire at the end of an eon burning a clump of grass. Therefore, it uproots the obscurations of karma and afflictions, and completely removes the obscurations of knowledge. Therefore, such benefits are extensively described in the Avatamsaka Sutra, moderately in the first chapter of the Bodhicharyavatara, or briefly as stated by Maitreya: 'It averts the path of evil destinies, clearly shows the path of higher realms, and also leads to the absence of old age and death. I prostrate to Bodhicitta.' Therefore, if one remembers the benefits of Bodhicitta at all times and in all ways, one will not lose Bodhicitta, and fundamental downfalls, etc., will not occur. For this purpose, one must remember to cultivate joy for oneself and others at the beginning and end. Now, for the method of not losing the Bodhicitta that has already arisen, and for it to increase more and more, there are two types of training: the training of aspirational Bodhicitta and the training of engaging Bodhicitta. First, for the method of not losing the Bodhicitta that has already arisen, there is the aspirational

The mind, the cause of the decline of Bodhicitta is the thought of pursuing self-satisfaction and its accomplice, anger. These two cause Bodhicitta to decline and not grow. How does it decline? If either of the two aspects of aspirational Bodhicitta declines, it is like cutting off the root of a tree, all the branches will collapse. Once the root downfall has occurred, even if other branch downfalls have not declined, it is useless. Root downfalls are difficult to restore, while branch downfalls are easy to restore. So, how do these two aspects decline? Abandoning sentient beings and abandoning omniscience. First, abandoning sentient beings, such as harming oneself, like a father-killing enemy; or even if it is not like this, just when one is unhappy, when you say "You to me...", the thought of pursuing self-satisfaction arises. When anger arises, it is abandoning the other. In this way, the thought of pursuing self-satisfaction and anger both cause the state of compassion focusing on sentient beings to decline. For example, if many sticks are bundled together, if one is taken out, all the others will scatter. Abandoning one sentient being, even if other sentient beings are not abandoned, is useless, because the root downfall has already occurred. Abandoning omniscience, for example, taking generosity as an example, the objects of generosity are the head and limbs, the objects of generosity are all sentient beings, the time is as long as existence lasts, the number is that each sentient being's head and limbs are as numerous as dust, and there is no place where one does not give. Like this, practicing discipline and so on also needs to be practiced in this way. Our teacher gave more heads and limbs than the number of dust particles on the great earth under the Bodhi tree, so needless to say others, one must learn like learning the six perfections, accumulate merit, even if there are obstacles from demons, one will lose Bodhicitta from the path of accumulation and junction, thinking: I am not a person who practices such a great Dharma. Would it be better to practice the attainment of the Hearer, Solitary Realizer Arhat? Because one has not incorporated all the phenomena to be realized on the path of seeing into practice like illusions, one has abandoned omniscience. From the path of accumulation and junction, the first thing one encounters is the thought and action of pursuing self-satisfaction, so both the Hearer's vows and the Bodhisattva's vows of the Sutra tradition are related to the thought of pursuing self-satisfaction.
