The difference between the conceptual mind and the wisdom that transcends the mind is as vast as the sky and the earth. Having meditated in this way, if you do not want to go anywhere, then settle the mind in accordance with the view of equanimity, without any fabrication. Or, when conceptual thoughts arise, examine and settle, that is, meditate by alternating between examination and settling, thereby training the mind well to be controlled, and you will be able to let go and settle. Then you need to examine the inner mind. Holding the mind to be permanent, singular, and independent. If you examine it carefully, the mind is not permanent, but has the nature of arising and ceasing in a continuous stream, like a river, it is impermanent. If you think it is singular, it is not, because there are many non-virtuous thoughts such as desire, hatred, delusion, pride, jealousy, and miserliness; there are many virtuous thoughts such as faith, renunciation, and the mind of enlightenment; and there are also many neutral thoughts of memory such as past experiences, speech, and eating. Furthermore, it has the nature of many things such as the eight aggregates of consciousness and the fifty-one mental factors. If you think it is independent, it is not, because it is dependent on objects. When encountering a pleasant object, desire arises; when encountering an unpleasant object, hatred arises; when encountering a neutral object, a deluded thought arises. Furthermore, renunciation of samsara, faith in nirvana, and so on, are all dependent on objects. Also, the past mind, thinking that it is accumulated and remains here, is not established because it does not exist. The present mind vanishes in an instant without a trace, so it is not established. The future mind, thinking that it comes and goes from here, cannot be found, because it has not arisen and has not been obtained, so it is not established. In this way, even though those with superior faculties, through examining the three times, cannot find it, and thus can be certain that the mind is without inherent existence, those with inferior faculties, even if they examine in that way and cannot find it, even if it does not exist, still have thoughts that arise that they do not want to remember but remember anyway, if they think that this kind of situation is very likely to happen anyway, then it is necessary to examine the three places of the mental factors: where they abide, where they go, and where they come from. For example, thoughts such as desire, etc., initially do not exist, but suddenly arise from somewhere, if you think that this exists, then first you need to examine the place where the mind arises, or the place where it originates, or the place where it appears. Once a mind arises, either from the six external objects, or from the six internal faculties, or from anywhere in between the two

Since there is no way to be born without a being that gives birth, first, the external objects: the object of eye consciousness is form, the object of ear consciousness is sound, the object of nose consciousness is smell, the object of tongue consciousness is taste, the object of body consciousness is touch. The object of mind consciousness established by these, which is the six elements of the Dharma realm, needs to be examined. First, regarding the object of eye consciousness, which is these forms, analyze them with the aspects of wisdom, and since the parts have no inherent nature, break them down into particles. Because they are not established by their own nature, there is no object from which consciousness arises. Similarly, all sounds and so on are composed of particles and are the nature of material phenomena. Therefore, divide all phenomena composed of particles into four parts with the wisdom of discernment. Eliminate four parts from each part and examine them. Finally, consider a particle like one part of a medium-sized particle of sunlight divided into forty parts as an indivisible particle. Even that can be divided into upper, lower, and directional parts. Therefore, the particle is a phenomenon without inherent nature, without foundation or root, and exists as the nature of emptiness. Therefore, there is no object from which mind arises. So, what is this that is born? If it is considered that dependent arising is unceasing, it is the manifestation of the power of emptiness, a great adornment, then it is the definite understanding of emptiness and dependent arising. In this way, since the six external objects are not established by their own nature, just as there is no way for a son to be born without a mother, there is no way for mind to be born. So, does mind arise from the six internal faculties? No, it does not. The six faculties are the eye faculty, ear faculty, nose faculty, tongue faculty, and body faculty, the five that have power over grasping their respective objects. Therefore, the faculties and the six, as soon as they cease, whatever consciousness there is, that is the mind. Therefore, the cessation of the previous five sense consciousnesses opens the occasion for the arising of non-conceptual mind consciousness, and the non-conceptual mind and the six, as soon as they cease, cause the arising of conceptual mind consciousness, therefore they are called faculties. Therefore, the five material faculties are examined in the same way as the previous examination of the state of the body. Since the particles have no inherent nature, there is no way for mind to arise from the internal faculties, just as there is no way for a son to be born without a father. So, does it arise between the two, the faculty and the object? No, it does not. Between the two, the faculty and the object, there are only the particles of light during the day and the particles of darkness during the night, and nothing else. Therefore, the two particles of light and darkness
