The preliminary practices of the common path. The preliminary practices of the common path. First, taking refuge. Second, the common preliminary practices are part of the four ways of gathering disciples, namely, acting in accordance with their needs. Among these six, the first is the instruction on taking refuge, which is the foundation stone of all paths. "All paths" is a plural term, so what does it refer to? Refuge must be taken before all paths of both Sutra and Tantra. As it is said: "Precepts may be possessed by all, but not by those who have not taken refuge." Therefore, although all non-Buddhists can take precepts, without first taking refuge, there is no pure and virtuous precept. Therefore, in order to cultivate the wisdom that realizes the truth of the path and selflessness in one's mind, one needs the support of samadhi. As it says: "Having understood that the higher insight endowed with perfect calm, completely destroys the afflictions, one should first seek calm, which is accomplished only when there is no attachment to the world." Similarly, one must protect the pure moral conduct that serves as its basis. If one needs to take vows, there is no way to take vows without first taking refuge. The definition of taking refuge is: being frightened by the suffering of oneself and others in samsara, vowing to rely on a special object, and making a commitment. For example, it is like a child being chased by a dog and seeking refuge with an adult. In particular, according to the Mahayana tradition, it is to take refuge out of fear of both samsara and nirvana. First, taking refuge is the opening of the door to all paths, and faith is the opening of the door to taking refuge. Faith can be divided into four types. First, pure faith does not require a reason; the object is a Buddha statue, the Dharma is a scripture, and the Sangha is a monk who holds a piece of maroon or yellow cloth in a square shape or larger. Desiring faith is the thought of wanting to attain liberation after knowing the faults of samsara and remembering the benefits of liberation. Believing faith is believing in cause and effect. This is the faith of knowing the Buddha, the faith of knowing the Dharma, and the faith of knowing the Sangha, which requires understanding the reasons. That is, one must understand the qualities of the teacher, the supreme Buddha Jewel, and the Three Jewels. In particular, one must understand that the Three Jewels and especially the Lama are not deceptive.
