Then. Maitreya said: "Because of abandonment, because of the nature of deceptive Dharma, because of absence, and because of being accompanied by fear, the two Dharmas and the Sangha are not permanent places of refuge." As it is said. The Dharma of scripture needs to understand its meaning, and when the meaning is understood as it is, the need for words is small, just as one does not need to carry a boat after crossing a river. Because of abandonment, the Dharma of realization, when higher and higher paths are attained, the former is abandoned or deceived, that is, because of impermanence. Because of absence, that is, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not have the qualities of the Bodhisattva saints, and the Bodhisattva saints do not have the qualities of the Buddha. Because ordinary beings of Bodhisattvas still have the fear of falling into the lower realms, they are not permanent places of refuge. The ultimate refuge, the Buddha himself, is the nature of the Three Jewels. As it is said: "The Able One has the Dharmakaya, and the Sangha is also his ultimate." Like this. The Able One is: the teacher Buddha Jewel. The Dharma is: the realization of the Dharmakaya. The teachings are the two Dharmakayas. The Dharma of the mind-stream qualities that are inseparable from it is the Sangha. The meaning is that the ultimate refuge is only the Buddha. The Three Roots and the channels, winds, and bindus will be discussed below. What is taught here is that essence, nature, and compassion are the refuge of Dzogchen. Relying on the three supports of channels, bindus, and winds, the nature of Bodhicitta is the wisdom of clear light. If summarized as one, as the Sutra says, it is the essence of the Sugata. As the Mantra says, it is the single bindu of self-born wisdom. If divided into two, it is the wisdom of the original purity of the great emptiness, and the two spontaneously accomplished wisdoms of appearance. If divided into three, it is the wisdom of the essence of emptiness, the wisdom of the nature of clarity, and the wisdom of the compassion that pervades all. Among them, there are two types of compassion: outer clarity and inner clarity. The compassion of inner clarity is the nature of the inseparability of appearance and emptiness, which is the great inseparability of the three. The difference in time, as the causal vehicle says, the outer Bodhicitta is until it does not reside under the Bodhi tree. The inner Bodhicitta, the essence of the Sugata of awareness has not manifested, or as the Mantra says, the mandala of the sky deities.

Until one awakens, one takes refuge. Such refuge with three distinctions is of two types: cause refuge and result refuge. Cause refuge can be divided into nominal commitment refuge and literal following-the-path refuge. The first is taking refuge with three distinctions, understanding the teacher as a path companion, and reciting refuge millions of times, etc. Following the path is practicing as promised, regarding the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the path, and the Sangha as companions in practice. Result refuge, as stated in the sutras, is aspiring bodhicitta, or the distinction of intention at this moment. The result refuge of mantra is the great indivisible bliss of the three aspects of self-arisen wisdom. If one realizes such a state, as it is said, "The swift protection of consciousness is the characteristic of mantra," all conceptualizations of grasping at characteristics are self-pacified, self-liberated, self-severed, self-dissolved, and self-purified in the space of non-conceptualization, thus it is result refuge. Alternatively, it is the vow of the characteristic vehicle to aim at the Three Jewels already present in the continuum of others, and to desire to attain them in one's own continuum. Since mantra takes the result as the path, the two bodies (form bodies) of the result as the path are the means of the generation stage; the Dharma body of the result as the path is the wisdom of the completion stage. Through these two ways, the activity of the three bodies of the result is taken as the path, hence it is called result refuge. Among the ways of taking refuge by such three types of individuals, here it is the way of taking refuge of a great individual. The distinction of intention is not for oneself, but with the thought of enabling all other sentient beings to attain the state of Buddhahood, which is the nature of the embodiment of all the Three Jewels. The distinction of time is to take refuge from today until one attains perfect enlightenment. The distinction of object is the Buddha and the noble ones who have realized direct perception, and the Dharma residing in their mindstreams. In particular, the excellent means of Vajra Essence, etc., the gross division is that the three—channels, drops, and winds—of the cause are complete in oneself, and although they are naturally pure, they have not yet manifested.
