Sa. As soon as one arrives at a secluded place, since there are no women, etc., all the afflictions arising from that place naturally subside. Associating with birds and wild animals, etc. All the assemblies of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and Vidyadharas of the past attained fruition by relying on mountain retreats. One must be secluded with an uncommon, self-willed mind. When meditating in that solitude, one must keep the vows perfectly pure, without any regret in one's mind. As it says: 'Abiding at the head of those who hold the precepts.' Then, one must meditate on the cause of non-distraction, which is samatha. As it says: 'Knowing that afflictions are completely destroyed by vipassanā that is fully endowed with śamatha, one should first seek śamatha, which is accomplished with manifest delight in that which is without worldly attachment.' Therefore, having first taken the vows, if there is no transgression, one will destroy the banner of Māra and be the one who raises the banner of the teachings. If a transgression occurs, one should not be indifferent, but generate regret for previous actions, and if one confesses and remedies according to the Dharma, one will destroy the banner of Māra and be the one who raises the banner of the teachings. On top of that, when meditating on the two stages of generation and completion, one must meditate with the three vows that are like the foundation of samaya, taking and abandoning what is to be done and not done in the places of permission and prohibition, with a pure three vows. The essence of samādhi is non-distraction. In all activities such as going, staying, eating, and sleeping, one must meditate by binding the mind with the rope of mindfulness. As it says: 'To the great pillar of Dharma, how it is bound, it does not fall away.' Therefore, the object of focus, the Dharma, is like a stake or pillar, and with the rope of mindfulness that does not forget what to take and abandon, one must bind it so that it does not stray elsewhere. Then, one should examine whether the mind, like a watchman of awareness, abides or does not abide. With awareness like a cautious guard, being careful about the places of entering and leaving, if the mind becomes distracted, one should take back the mind and place it on the previous object of focus. A beginner should not allow the mind to wander to external objects, but should alternately practice loving-kindness and the samādhi of loving-kindness, binding it with the rope of mindfulness. One must guard and watch with awareness. First, the small meditation cushion, about two cubits on each side, the outside higher than the front,

Slightly lower, or fix the bedding. On top of that, when practicing calm abiding with the seven-point posture of Vairochana, the body should be relaxed, and the mind should be without any stinging pain. There are two types of calm abiding: calm abiding with an object and calm abiding without an object. The first, calm abiding with an object, such as loving-kindness and the samadhi of loving-kindness, requires holding onto a virtuous object of mind and relying on mindfulness, awareness, and vigilance. The cause of the inner mind not being distracted is not cutting off the past, not welcoming the future, and not allowing the six consciousnesses to be distracted by objects in the present. Depending on each individual's temperament, whichever tightness or looseness feels good to one's own mind, one should remain without making adjustments to that comfortable level of tightness or looseness. Calm abiding without an object is not staring at one particular object such as loving-kindness, but rather letting go of the mind without making adjustments, simply and loosely. From time to time, it should be grasped by mindfulness, awareness, and vigilance. In this way, as the mind becomes more and more stable, one must then distinguish the differences in samadhi. Meditating on the samadhi of loving-kindness and so on is called the samadhi of childish play. As the experience of meditation becomes more and more intense, even though there is no reason to be happy, the mind feels a subtle joy, which is the experience of bliss. When the mind's conceptual thoughts and afflictions are cleared away, and one can see the inside and outside of a house, etc., this is the experience of clarity. If one looks to see if conceptual thoughts arise in the mind, one feels that they will not arise, which is like the experience of non-conceptuality. These are all merely calm abiding, and because of attachment to the experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality, it is the samadhi of childish play. Because of attachment to bliss and so on, it will not become the cause of attaining the state of liberation. "My bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality," this is the clinging to the self of a person, and clinging to bliss and so on is the clinging to the self of phenomena, which remains in the mind and contradicts the view of selflessness, which is the cause of liberation. Having become accustomed to this, one distinguishes the limbs of samadhi by means of the formless realms, and by practicing, one obtains the divine eye, clairvoyance, magical powers, and so on, which are the qualities of samadhi. Then, on the basis of that discriminating meaning, one analyzes the self of a person and the self of phenomena with reason, and one becomes accustomed to the union of emptiness and calm abiding, like water and milk mixed together. In this way, because the mind's way of grasping is shifting outward, the previous attachment to bliss and so on will not arise.
