The basis upon which we establish things is not whether or not one has relative Bodhicitta that distinguishes whether the Dharma is Mahayana or Hinayana. Therefore, relative Bodhicitta is most important, and it is necessary to have view as a companion. In terms of definitive meaning, the ultimate practice lies in the realization of ultimate Bodhicitta. One cannot attain the ultimate result with just relative Bodhicitta. Furthermore, at the time of being a beginner, one must have a good intention. If the intention is good, then the bhumis and paths are also good; if the intention is bad, then the bhumis and paths are also bad. Thus, if one possesses Bodhicitta, one can traverse the good bhumis of the ten bhumis and the good paths of the five paths. If the intention is bad, one must traverse the bad bhumis of the nine bhumis of the three realms and the bad paths of the five realms of samsara. Therefore, for a beginner, it does not depend on view, it does not depend on meditation, but it depends on Bodhicitta, and it does not depend on anything else. Even Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize emptiness, as Sakya Pandita said: "Emptiness is meditated upon by the Shravakas, and its result is the attainment of cessation." Therefore, one attains Buddhahood through Bodhicitta and the accumulation of merit. Thus, the New Schools say that generating relative Bodhicitta is most important. The Nyingma school says that among the three: the straightforward meaning, the mere definitive meaning, and the ultimate definitive meaning, first, one must have relative Bodhicitta; for the mere definitive meaning, one must unite both relative and ultimate Bodhicitta; even Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not realize the view of the three great ones. In terms of definitive meaning, the ultimate practice is ultimate Bodhicitta. As Nagarjuna said, Bodhicitta is the Mahayana, etc. Chandrakirti, in the Madhyamakavatara, argues that the ultimate is achieved through one vehicle, and only ultimate Bodhicitta can achieve the ultimate one vehicle, but relative Bodhicitta cannot achieve the ultimate one vehicle. Therefore, such a good intention, Bodhicitta, arises in a person with good thoughts, but it does not arise in a person with bad thoughts. There are three methods for generating it: training the mind in the four immeasurables, generating supreme Bodhicitta, and upholding the vows of aspiration and engagement. First, one must train the mind in the four immeasurables. If one does not train the mind, one cannot abandon the thought of striving for one's own benefit.
