One should generate the pure intention of wanting to practice the difficulty of finding leisure and fortune. To pray to the Lama: On the crown of one's head, visualize a white lotus with a hundred thousand petals spread out, with red and yellow stamens, and on top of that, on a lion throne with cushions of silk brocade, the root Lama appears in the form of a monastic or a mantra practitioner, and pray with the five recognitions, knowing the Lama to be the Buddha. Recite "All Buddhas of the three times," etc., and the verses of supplication at the beginning and end of the four thoughts that turn the mind, and pray with sincere devotion. The Lama, with great compassion, dissolves into light and merges into oneself, and in the state of being inseparable from the Lama's mind, do not follow after the past, do not welcome the future, and do not continue the thoughts of the present, but rest naturally in whatever state arises. These are the preliminaries of the session. In the main part, first meditate on the eight freedoms, and among the four non-human unfree states, the first is hell. Meditate on the four aspects of hell: the place, the body, the suffering, and the lifespan. The place is a dark, pitch-black, and gloomy place. All the ground is iron ground, like that made from burning charcoal, and even a place to put an ordinary clod of earth cannot be seen. A mountain of fire with black smoke a cubit high is burning. Above, showers of embers, burnt stones, and weapons are falling. The body is four times larger than that of a person from Jambudvipa, with a body color like blood, or like the fluttering of black wool feathers, or with skin as thin as that of a newborn king's son. The flesh is tight, very clear like an eye, and the touch is unbearable. The hair stands on end, with three corners of the eyes, the body hair stands on end, the limbs are coarse, and the belly is large. Such a hell being, like an angry one, if seen by a person from Jambudvipa, would faint. The suffering is that there is no rest day or night, and without day or night, the body is slashed by weapons and burned by the ground and showers of burnt stones, etc., without beginning or end, and there is not even the slightest chance of happiness, and that is suffering. The lifespan must be experienced for kalpas and so on, beyond the number of years. The place of the cold hell is in the midst of snow mountains and glaciers, with blizzards raging. The body is the same as in the hot hells. The suffering is the suffering of cold. The lifespan is years.

One must experience immeasurable suffering. Now, no matter where one is born in the hot and cold hells, one must repeatedly contemplate whether one has the leisure to practice the sacred Dharma, and engage in analytical meditation. Furthermore, if after such contemplation one feels despair and has nowhere to go, then do not follow the past, do not welcome the future, and do not continue the present, but rather engage in resting meditation in an unfabricated manner. When a thought arises again, one should also examine it. When one does not want thoughts to arise, one should let go, alternating between examination and resting. Secondly, the realm of the pretas is: filled with filth and gravel, with many tree stumps burned by fire, scattered with coarse poisonous thorns, dry riverbeds filled with grayish-white pebbles, and many dry reeds floating around. The body is like the bones of the end of an eon, or dry antlers, or hard butter skin. The head is about the size of a clay pot, the neck is like a horse's tail, the belly is like a region, and the limbs are like reed stalks. The sound of a single departed preta is like the sound of five hundred carts being dragged, and sparks of red fire emanate from the joints. The suffering is: for the pretas, summer is hot even the moon, and winter is cold even the sun, and although they see many trees bearing fruit, they disappear. Although they see the great ocean with waves rippling like crystal rosaries, they dry up as soon as they see it, becoming even more miserable and painful than before. The lifespan can be as long as ten thousand years, and the short lifespan is uncertain. If one is born in such a place, one must alternately engage in examination and resting, contemplating whether one has the leisure to practice the sacred Dharma. Thirdly, the realm of animals is: mostly in the darkness between continents, in places where one cannot even see one's own hand when stretching it out. The body is like fish and crocodiles, coiling around Mount Meru three times, etc. The small ones appear as dust particles and needle tips, etc. The suffering is: in general, they are foolish and deluded, ignorant of what to accept and reject. Specifically, the large ones devour the small ones, and the small ones peck the large ones into ashes, depriving them of their dwelling and clothing, and devouring them, the suffering is immeasurable. The long-lived gods dwell in the northeast corner of the fourth dhyana heaven, in a dark place like a tree stump burned by fire. The body is the body of empty-knowing samadhi, experiencing happiness and suffering, and virtue.
