Therefore, one must practice wholeheartedly. As stated in the *Heap of Jewels Sutra*: "Merely hearing this teaching of the perfectly enlightened one does not liberate. For example, those who are violently carried away by a river, unable to resist, eventually dry up and die. Dharma without practice is the same." Nowadays, so-called practice is not like tasting salt in a dish. Practice must achieve stability. Until stability is achieved, practice in fixed sessions. Combine the number of sessions with the experience of the elements and faculties. Once stability is achieved, the number of sessions need not be fixed. Do not be distracted, maintain mindfulness and awareness, be steadfast, and generate diligence. So it is said. The benefits of practicing the Completion Stage are obtained differently depending on the diligence of individuals with superior, intermediate, and inferior faculties. In Drakpo Gyaltsen's booklet, it says: The benefits of practicing the Completion Stage are: The best, body, appearance, and mind merge, one gains mastery over the four elements, and one's intention is the same as Padmasambhava. The intermediate, one sees the truth of reality, and gains control over birth and death. The least, one also meets one's own mind, and there is no fear of the bardo. If one gains mastery over both the Generation and Completion Stages, one will achieve the rainbow body Dharmakaya in one lifetime, and manifest enlightenment without a physical body. So it is said. Just as the previous vidyadharas and accomplished masters, relying on the two stages of Generation and Completion, manifested supreme accomplishment. Therefore, it is important to apply practice to one's own mind with unwavering faith. Some are lazy and think that someone like me cannot attain enlightenment, but it is possible. The great Bodhisattva Shantideva said: As long as beings like bees, flies, and worms generate the power of diligence, they can attain the unobtainable, supreme enlightenment. I, who am born as a human being, and who can distinguish benefit and harm, if I do not abandon the practice of enlightenment, why should I not attain enlightenment? As it is said, one should strive to generate strong diligence with pure intention, faith, and the four irreversible faiths. Fifth, the means to perfect stability.

Do not see faults in oneself, do not look for merits. Even if one possesses happiness, prosperity, and wealth, understanding happiness and suffering as equal, one should not stray from the sacred Dharma, not abandon it, and strive in practice. Sickness is the broom of sins and obscurations. Adverse conditions are the encouragement of Dharma. Obstacles and demons are the provisions for the path. The confidence of a bodhisattva is the instruction. As the glorious protector Nagarjuna said: Desire, hatred, destruction, and ignorance—whatever does not stray from the Dharma—this is called a faithful one, and is certainly a supreme vessel of goodness. As such, one should not be lax in practice and never stray from one's vows. At all times and in all circumstances, the five poisons of affliction, the eight worldly concerns, the appearances of desire, enjoyment, pleasure, and pain, attachment and aversion to enemies and friends, and whatever diverse thoughts arise, one should not follow them, not be pleased, not be angry. Whatever doors of experience arise, one should not taste their flavor. Without pride or attachment, one should rest in emptiness. Rest in non-attachment. Rest in non-grasping. Rest in abandonment. Rest in without hope or fear. Rest in without thought or conception. If one follows after good or bad thoughts, that is samsara. As Nagarjuna said: Samsara arises from thoughts, and thoughts arise from the mind. In the tantras it is said: Thoughts are great ignorance, and are the cause of falling into the ocean of samsara. Also from the Tree Sutra: What is called samsara arises from thoughts; it does not exist at all. Therefore, to be separated from thoughts is called nirvana. And: The cause of birth in samsara is karma and affliction. The three poisons of desire, hatred, and ignorance—the actions created by them are unwholesome. As it is said, from the three poisons arise the ten unwholesome actions, the six root afflictions, the twenty secondary afflictions, and so forth—all kinds of afflictive thoughts will arise. If one can transform these unwholesome things into the path, that is wisdom. As it is said: If one is controlled by thoughts, there is no liberation. If one controls thoughts with wisdom, there is no suffering of samsara. To transform them into the path in this way, first, when desire suddenly arises in one's own mindstream, one should immediately recognize its nature and look at it, cut off its root, uproot it, and not follow it.
