It is called neither being nor non-being. Children there distinguish between being and non-being. These two, being and non-being, are the dharma of non-being. Thus it is said. Therefore, realizing one's own mind is the actual Buddha. As it is said in the Adaka Yeshe: If the mind is realized, it is the Buddha, do not seek the Buddha elsewhere, one should meditate on this kind of cognition. And as it is said in the Sutra of the Non-Arising of Dharmas: It shows that the nature of sentient beings is Bodhi itself. It shows that the nature of Bodhi is sentient beings themselves. Sentient beings and Bodhi are not two. Knowing this way becomes supreme Bodhi. And as it is said in the Nirvana Sutra: What is called the Buddha-nature is the nature of the mind, the ultimate emptiness. The ultimate is wisdom. What is called emptiness is not seeing both emptiness and non-emptiness. One should know that the Buddha-nature is the Middle Way, free from the two extremes. Thus it shows transcendence over existence, non-existence, permanence, and annihilation. As it is said in the Vajra Tent: Apart from the precious mind, there is no Buddha and no sentient being. And as it is said in the Two Examinations: Sentient beings are indeed Buddhas, but they are obscured by sudden defilements. If those are removed, then it is the Buddha himself. Thus, for impure sentient beings, it is the Alaya; for the pure, it is the Tathagatagarbha. It abides and pervades all of Samsara and Nirvana. From this Tathagatagarbha, the self-manifested body of wisdom and the realm of all Buddha-fields are inherently present. Although its essence is ultimately free from defilements, if this is not known, and the object and subject are grasped as different, then how can it manifest according to the accumulated karma? Therefore, it is the realm of the Tathagatagarbha with defilements, but because it is sudden, it has not been mixed or stained with the essence. Therefore, the essence is Nirvana, naturally pure, and the appearance of Samsara, the two are like water and ice, its nature pervades the presence or absence of grasping and clinging. Although the power of the Buddha and all the qualities of fearlessness are spontaneously present, they must now be awakened by their respective karmas. Therefore, the basis is the deluded appearance to sentient beings, the experience to yogis at the time of the path, and the Rupakaya and Dharmakaya of union and the wheel of inexhaustible ornaments to the Buddhas at the time of the result. It pervades without partiality to all, including oneself.

Furthermore, in essence, apart from temporary defilements, in terms of the fundamental nature, there is no difference between Buddha and sentient beings. Like a lamp inside a vase, it is unchanging, and it is the perfectly accomplished Tathagatagarbha. Saying that the self-nature of Alaya is pure is in reference to its inherent goodness. The Ratnakuta Sutra states: "The good nature of Alaya is what the sons of the Buddhas see and hear. The most virtuous Alaya, the immaculate Alaya is merit, and that is the Tathagata. The various grounds are the various aspects of Alaya, and the Tathagatagarbha is also virtuous. Regarding that essence, the Tathagata teaches with the name of Alaya. The Tathagata proclaims the essence as Alaya, but the dull-witted cannot understand. Now, the Alaya consciousness is constantly associated with habitual tendencies, accompanying the seven consciousnesses without mixing, and it is the cause of both pervasive defilement and purification." And so on. In this sutra and in definitive sutras and treatises, there is a very extensive exposition on the abiding of the Tathagatagarbha, and it explains the reasons why it cannot be accommodated by the views of the self of the Tirthikas and the Hinayana. As it says: "The consciousness that takes hold of aggregates is very deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a river. If it is grasped as self, it is not permissible. Do not explain this meaning to children." And so on. Although there are many, if summarized, as stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: Mahamati Bodhisattva asked: "World Honored One, as the Tathagatagarbha is spoken of in the sutras, the World Honored One speaks of self-nature luminosity, which is pure from the beginning, possessing the thirty-two marks, existing within all sentient beings. World Honored One, like a precious jewel wrapped in cloth stained with dirt, or like being wrapped in the cloth of the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas, being suppressed by greed, hatred, and delusion, becoming a defilement full of delusion, if it is said to be permanent, stable, and real, then what is the difference between the Tathagatagarbha spoken of by the World Honored One and the self spoken of by the Tirthikas?" The World Honored One replied:
