If you maintain without being controlled by distraction and busyness until you gain freedom, you don't need to worry about meditation not arising. If you meditate too intensely by suppressing the mind, conceptual thoughts will not be suppressed and will increase. If you relax, it will abide in its natural state. The supreme accomplished master Saraha said: If bound, it tries to go in ten directions; if released, it abides unwavering and stable. I realize this is like a camel going back and forth. Therefore, new meditators, when conceptual thoughts arise, examine and restrain them. Sometimes, without imposing artifice on whatever arises, just let go. But the holy ones say: In the state of boundless release, meditate with restraint and release with relaxation. Machig also said: Restrain with restraint and release with relaxation; the key point of meditation is there. Also, sometimes one forgets for a long time, and then mindfulness arises immediately. Like before, like cutting the rope binding hay, leave it loose instead of engaging in recollection. If you guard with mindfulness in this way, whatever experiences arise, such as the experience of emptiness, the experience of bliss, non-conceptual experiences, and the emptiness of not feeling the body, or the transparency of mountains and rocks, smoke, etc., do not have hope or fear. Whether it arises or not, leave it as it is. Furthermore, when conceptual thoughts arise and are recognized, the conceptual thoughts to be abandoned and the antidote to be abandoned—mindfulness—are like a tiger and leopard meeting face to face, unable to continue for long. Therefore, without needing to exert effort in applying an antidote, they will each calm down in their own place, like an ocean without waves, without affirmation or negation. In this situation, know the arising from the abiding, and grasp the self-nature from the arising; this is the moment when abiding and arising are of one taste. The one who recognizes abiding and arising, some call it self-awareness, some call it discriminating wisdom, some say it is attention, and some say it is intention. In general, if one meditates on calm abiding and insight separately, then in meditating on calm abiding, identifying sinking and excitement is accomplished through the nine stages of mind abiding. There are methods of cultivating without wind, methods of cultivating with wind, and so on. But this is a method of combining calm abiding and insight without separating them, a unique method of cutting to the essential point of the instructions that lead to emptiness. Others have methods of leading to appearance. Therefore, calm abiding is called
