So, the mind focuses on one point, whether there is an object of focus or not, it is free from distraction and thoughts, clear and bright, naturally appearing, that is (Shamatha). It is not like being unconscious and unaware, with the five senses closed. What Vipassana does is, in the state of clear emptiness and self-nature, whether it abides or moves, it abides without attachment, just as it is said in the Bodhisattva Pitaka: The Shamatha of a Bodhisattva is correct meditation, and it does not correctly abide in the feeling of tranquility. Vipassana is the view, it is seeing, and even the view itself cannot be seen. Whoever sees in this way, sees correctly. It is also said, do not eliminate dullness and agitation, and do not do too much analysis after recognizing the self-nature of the state change. Just as Machig (Machig Labdrön) said: Dullness is the way the Dharmakaya abides, and agitation is the self-nature radiance of awareness. Therefore, it is said that extreme agitation is the shining of the light of wisdom, so do not stop it. The venerable Milarepa said: It is certain that you are a practitioner, do not eliminate the faults of dullness and agitation. If a practitioner eliminates the faults of dullness and agitation, it is like lighting a lamp in the daytime, alas, my Lhaje (doctor) teacher. Similarly, there is no need to accept or reject the conceptual thoughts of the five aggregates such as form and feeling. Whatever appears, let it naturally liberate. Just as the Heart Sutra says: Form is emptiness, etc. And the Mother Sutra says: Kausika, do not seek Prajnaparamita from form in this way, and do not seek Prajnaparamita outside of form. Why? Because form is not Prajnaparamita, and there is no Prajnaparamita outside of form. Therefore, it is said, do not hate what is to be abandoned and what is to be practiced as enemies. In short, it is very important to simply recognize the self-nature of thoughts, and to know that what is to be abandoned and what is to be practiced are inseparable and indistinguishable. The one who recognizes the self-nature must also know that the self-nature is unborn. These are the introductions to the profound meaning, grasping from the root, introducing the relaxation of the nature, the nature has looseness and tightness, so it is said to show the key to the combination of tightening and loosening. Second, repetition, in the profound meaning it says: Stop the previous meditation, move the body slightly, look at the sky with your eyes, make a long sound, and do it like this. Do not pay attention to the posture of the body, do not pay attention to the breath of the language, and awareness does not depend on anything.

All past thoughts are ashes. They are past. They have ceased, so cut them off outwards! All future thoughts are unborn. Unborn. Unestablished, so cut them off inwards! All present thoughts, the extent of their arising, the extent of thinking, the extent of remembering, the extent of movement, all of these are unreal. They are emptiness. They are unborn. They are beyond mind. They are inexpressible. They are without trace. They are without support, so relax and rest in a state of non-grasping of the mind! Whatever is remembered or arises in the mind, there is not even a particle of substance or characteristic established in it. There is not even a hair's breadth of truth or permanence established, so when thoughts suddenly arise, when they arise vividly, when memories suddenly occur, stare at them intently. Briefly hold on to them, rest comfortably, and they will crumble and disappear on their own. They will vanish in an instant. That is the essence of meditation, so rest in that state! The venerable lord said: In the state of emptiness, brandish the spear of awareness. There is no clinging or suffering in meaning, Dingriwa! Thus he spoke. Like that, thoughts do not dissolve. Do not change. Do not spread. If they spread, rest briefly. Completely let go. Cast them far away! At that time, whatever thoughts of right and wrong may arise. After that, do not let awareness follow, but let it naturally liberate in its own place. Do not continue the spread of thoughts. Do not perpetuate memories. Do not expand the scope of awareness, and by saying "Phat," completely cut off the flow and spread of thoughts. Let awareness rest in a state free from calculation. Let mind and thought be free from speech. Let intelligence be free from effort. Let the mind rest in a state free from memory and thought. Machig said: Because the mind is not dual. Look in a way that is unseeable. When you look, your own mind cannot be seen. Not seeing is seeing the Dharma. Thus she spoke, keep it as it is. Then, from the profound meaning, the root text of Opening the Door of the Sky, in the word guidance, there are three ways to establish meditation. The teacher of scriptural authority. The teacher of oral instructions and secret precepts. The teacher of experiential conviction. The first is: Like that, the meaning pointed out by the lama, the emptiness and unbirth of mind itself, is without error or delusion. The way things abide in their own nature is like that. The intention of all the Buddhas also abides in that way. So, this kind of mind itself, when it is not realized, although it appears as substantial, when it is realized, it is emptiness itself. As it is said, whatever exists
