must also be mixed. Not only is it severance, but even the accomplished ones of India have many histories of going to practice only in charnel grounds for the sake of vigorous progress. The tantric canons also repeatedly mention the need for important contemplations in charnel grounds. Although in Tibet there is not as much terror as in the charnel grounds of India, such as tigers, leopards, demons, dakinis, etc., Machik (Tibetan place name) said that one should go to dangerous places where demons dwell, etc., and to places like charnel ground markets, which are full of fear, dread, shame, and oppression, because there conceptual thoughts will definitely arise there. So, what is the need to throw the corpse to animals to eat? The Jataka says, "By the side of the trees, the head was given a thousand times." The Vinaya Sutra says, "Because the thought of compassion is not pure, it was not said to give this body as alms. For the sake of attaining enlightenment in this life and the next, use it as a cause for accomplishing great deeds." Therefore, one must give in order to attain enlightenment for oneself and others. Machik (Tibetan place name) said, "Throwing the corpse to animals to eat perfects the accumulation of merit. Meditating on awareness as unborn perfects the accumulation of wisdom. Carrying the two accumulations in union is the path of severance." To this, someone might ask: Those are all sutras about actually giving the body, can one perfect the accumulations merely through visualization? Answer: One can definitely perfect the accumulations. Before attaining the bhumis, it was not said to actually give the body. After attaining the first bhumi, it is said that between body and mind, the mind is more important. Because there is not so much attachment to the body, seeing it as illusory. Now, between body and mind, in this stage where the body is more important and attachment is stronger, if one's mind is full of great compassion, and one is determined to definitely give to someone who sincerely wants to eat, then it is said that giving the body at the time of attaining the first bhumi is not as powerful as generating the mind of giving at this time, and the accumulation of merit is greater. Just as Dharmarakshita (Sanskrit Romanization: Dharmārakṣita) gave his flesh to the sick, but felt great pain because he had not attained the bhumis, one should know that this is the realm of a bodhisattva. After that, the actual practice is to take the above-mentioned self-arising view, meditation, and stable foundation as the basis, and for the sake of enhancing post-meditation and becoming proficient in behavior, it is divided into two types.
