And, in particular, non-humans who harm me are called ghosts. These ghosts, who have been our parents countless times, after they pass away, because they do not recognize us and due to the power of accumulating bad karma, they cause harm to us. However, if we recognize them as our parents, in order to save them from their suffering, we should generate love and compassion, without regard for our own flesh and blood and life, giving these to them, and embracing them with a loving heart. We should not abandon them in any way, but tame them and guide them towards liberation. If they cannot be tamed in this way, we should tame them with both peaceful and wrathful methods. If they cannot be tamed in this way, we must tame them with wrathful methods. If they cannot be tamed in this way, we can only use wrathful methods, engaging in the activity of wrathful samadhi, even sacrificing flesh and blood, we must tame them and lead them into the sacred Dharma. However, if we generate great hatred for our own benefit and take violent measures to harm them, it will bring suffering to both ourselves and others, and it is also contrary to my religion. Therefore, taking violent measures solely for the benefit of others is not a fault. For example, the glorious Lord of Wisdom (Sanskrit: śrī jñāna nātha), who is extremely fierce, severe, and majestic, with a black face, a furious expression, bared fangs, and showing a terrifying appearance, subdues those malicious beings. But this is not to harm those beings, but to liberate them from suffering and guide them towards liberation. Parents disciplining their children is also for the benefit of the children, not for the benefit of the parents themselves. Similarly, when working for the benefit of sentient beings, one should not be motivated by selfish desires. Therefore, the so-called gods and ghosts cannot be distinguished by their appearance, nor can they be distinguished by their behavior. That is, there are ghosts who are beautiful and pleasing in appearance, who behave well, but who harm sentient beings; and there are harmful beings who are ugly and terrifying in appearance, but who act as gods who benefit others. Therefore, if those non-humans with harmful intentions and evil natures are pleased, they can also become favorable conditions and companions for us to achieve enlightenment, becoming gods. So, ghosts can become gods, therefore it is said gods and ghosts.

One should understand that their respective natures are not different but one. Those malicious demons, due to the end of their lives, may also be reborn as worldly deities in terms of nature and state, therefore they are called gods and demons, and their nature is the same. Similarly, ordinary worldly deities with beautiful appearances, even if they are unhappy, can also become harmful demons, so they are also called gods and demons. Those deities, after their lives end, become fierce non-humans and act as demons, so they are called gods and demons. In order to benefit unruly sentient beings, the wisdom deities show wrathful forms, together with retinues such as crows, black dogs, jackals, etc. If ordinary people can see them, they will also treat those wisdom deities as demons, calling them gods and demons, and feel fear. In order to harm all sentient beings, those fierce and terrifying demons will also show very beautiful forms, making ordinary people happy and infatuated with them, thereby bringing harm, so there are also cases where they act as both gods and demons. Moreover, the wrathful and fierce forms of the wisdom deities cannot be shown by malicious demons. No matter how beautiful a form a malicious demon shows, it is shown for the purpose of harming all sentient beings. No matter how wrathful a wisdom deity is, it is for the purpose of protecting and saving all sentient beings. However, if one does not understand this, and merely distinguishes between gods and demons based on good and bad, benefit and harm, it will cause the mind to become afflicted. Regarding the two results of happiness and suffering that arise from the two karmas of good and evil, one says that the gods have given benefit and the demons have caused harm, thereby clinging to the distinctions of gods and demons, and not understanding that benefit and harm arise from the accumulation of karma, thus clinging to inherent existence, and continuing to perpetuate this clinging, thereby becoming the cause of samsara, and suffering is immeasurable. Therefore, it is very important to understand the law of karma. That is to say, the two of gods and demons, the two of good and bad, the two of benefit and harm, the two of happiness and suffering, the two of high and low, the two of attachment and aversion, the two of samsara and nirvana, etc., countless inconceivable karmas arise, all of which are produced from the various good and non-good karmas accumulated by all sentient beings themselves. One should understand that all harm, discomfort, and unpleasantness are not
