Someone said that just making offerings has great merit. I asked if there was a deeper way to accumulate merit. The answer was yes. I asked to be given that. The answer was that if you practice the instructions taught by the lama without wasting them, that is it. I asked the virtuous friend Nyukrumpa if it is possible to become a Buddha in one lifetime and one body. The answer was that it requires not caring even a little about this life. I asked the virtuous friend Yarlungpa, and he said that that statement is not necessarily definitive, but has a hidden meaning. The accomplished Menri Lu needs a lifespan as long as the sun and moon, is the seventh rebirth, can see the face of the yidam deity, and can go to the land of the dakinis. I asked, is that so? The answer was that that statement is not hidden in meaning, but is definitive. It requires not caring about this life at all. From a qualified lama, a qualified disciple receives complete initiation into the mandala of secret mantra, and then continuously meditates on the instructions of the generation and completion stages, so that the best will attain enlightenment in this life, the intermediate will achieve it at the time of death or in the bardo, and even if very lazy, will achieve it within seven or sixteen lifetimes. If one does not achieve it even then, it is because the vows have been broken, and there is a danger of being born in the lower realms for a while. In short, Lhaje Tonpa, do not associate with people who have biased views, do not listen to their words, do not follow them, but associate with people who practice meditation, listen to their words, and you must follow them. All consultations should be done with holy people who have renounced this life. Some people who are deluded by this life will come to teach you the eight worldly concerns. In short, there are ways to go astray in emptiness. There are four ways to go astray in emptiness: emptiness becoming ostentation, emptiness becoming the nature of knowledge, emptiness becoming an antidote, and emptiness becoming attachment. Emptiness becoming ostentation is said like this: whatever can be grasped and whatever can grasp, whatever becomes an object of consciousness, all is said to be emptiness. Emptiness becoming the nature of knowledge is done like this: all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana are said to be emptiness. Emptiness becoming an antidote is done like this: whatever afflictions and conceptual thoughts arise, just looking at them is said to be emptiness. Emptiness becoming attachment is done like this: saying that there is nothing to meditate on, and all meditation is empty.

There are various claims. However, these are not the correct paths. Nevertheless, for beginners, they may be somewhat helpful in reversing the attachment to thoughts. In general, if the root of the mind is not determined, even if there are experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, one will not transcend the three realms of existence. Not determining the root is an experiential practice. So, what is the correct path? When a qualified lama introduces a qualified student and guides them, the innate awareness pervades all sentient beings. For all Buddhas, the appearance of the Dharmakaya is clear. When a yogi meditates using countless methods, the view is spontaneously realized, afflictions naturally cease, discursive thoughts are naturally cut off, and wisdom naturally arises. At that time, the realization experienced cannot be expressed in words, like the bliss of a young woman or the dream of a mute. This basis exists in all sentient beings, but it is not recognized. Therefore, it is crucial to rely on a lama with lineage. Therefore, do not direct the innate awareness anywhere, do not close any doors, it cannot be represented by any example, it cannot be reached by any expression, it cannot be depicted by any term. Therefore, do not fabricate, relax in the natural, unfabricated state, he said, and then sang this song. Certain that it is the view, look at your own mind. If you seek the view outside of the mind, it is like a giant searching for lost treasure, ah, Lhaje Tonpa. Certain that it is meditation, do not eliminate the faults of sinking and excitement. If meditation eliminates the faults of sinking and excitement, it is like lighting a lamp during the day, ah, Lhaje Tonpa. Certain that it is conduct, do not alternately accept and reject. If conduct alternately accepts and rejects, it is like a bee trapped in a hive, ah, Lhaje Tonpa. Certain that it is samaya, rest in the confidence of the view. If you seek an unprotected samaya elsewhere, it is like reversing the flow of a river, ah, Lhaje Tonpa. Certain that it is the fruit, generate certainty in the mind. If you seek an unobtainable fruit elsewhere, it is like a frog jumping into the sky, ah, Lhaje Tonpa. Certain that it is the lama, ask your own mind. If you seek the lama outside of the mind, it is like abandoning your own mind, ah, Lhaje Tonpa. Therefore, all appearances are gathered into the mind, ah, Lhaje Tonpa. Thus he spoke.
