I (Milarepa) felt that I couldn't live even for a day, so I asked you to make some offerings. I was thinking about whether I could get some merit from taking refuge, but I couldn't make offerings. My sister thought, what should I do? So she went to the village to beg with great aversion. After searching everywhere, she found some begged flour and brought it back. Seeing that I had no clothes and was naked, she didn't even feel ashamed that I was her sister. Now I don't look like a person anymore, she said. Then the venerable one (Milarepa) sang this song: I prostrate to the supreme gurus! Please bless me to realize the hermitage of asceticism! I always travel in the human world, and unconsciously forget my hometown. Practicing alone in the mountain cave, I unconsciously forget the village. Watching the various tricks of the monkeys, I unconsciously forget the calves and lambs. Meditating on the guru on the crown of my head, I unconsciously forget relatives and friends. Thinking of the Dharma in my heart, I unconsciously forget the customs of the human world. Burning inner heat on my body, I unconsciously forget clothes. Food is meditation, I unconsciously forget meat and wine. Practicing clear light union, I unconsciously forget elaboration. Practicing non-discriminating wisdom, I unconsciously forget discriminating thoughts. Holding sharp iron tools, I unconsciously forget the neighbors. Doing whatever comes to mind, I unconsciously forget secrets and hiding. Living alone and freely, I unconsciously forget shame. The world's farming is a city of poison, and from that city, the yogi is liberated. As she sang, the sister went begging again, and on the way she met a guru named Bari Lotsawa, who had wealth, stoves, horses, blankets, and umbrellas, and was teaching the Dharma. The sister thought, this is what human practitioners are like, what use is my brother, who is a practitioner without property? So she searched around and found a piece of coarse cloth mixed with wool dust, dog hair, and goat hair from an old wool pile, and took it to offer to the venerable one (Milarepa), saying: We need a human practitioner like Guru Bari Lotsawa, your practice is of no use, make this coarse cloth into a garment and wear it, like Bariwa.

When his attendant requested, he sang this song in response. I pray to the body of the supreme Lama, Bless me to endure practicing in solitude. The golden small vase on top of the umbrella is one, The silk fringe under the umbrella is two, The peacock's flying place in the middle is three, The umbrella ribs painted with five colors are four. If one revolves around these four, even a fly can fly, Therefore, it is more auspicious to abandon the eight worldly concerns. Abandon the eight worldly concerns, Petama! The colorful small temple behind the village is one, The teachings of the newly arrived young lecturer are two, The butter tea stove is three, The skill of the young monk is four. If one protects these four, even a fly can barely manage, Therefore, it is more auspicious to abandon the eight worldly concerns. Abandon the eight worldly concerns, Petama! The yellow conch shell inlaid with iron ornaments is one, The beautiful streamer on it is two, The conch shell maker who has tongue, breath, and palate is three, The clamor of many black-headed people is four. If one accomplishes these four, even a fly can barely succeed, Therefore, it is more auspicious to abandon the eight worldly concerns. Abandon the eight worldly concerns, Petama! The pony's raised head is one, The beautiful silk cushion on it is two, The turquoise water-patterned saddle blanket is three, The many iron breastplates are four. If one seeks these four, even a fly can barely find them, Therefore, it is more auspicious to abandon the eight worldly concerns. Abandon the eight worldly concerns, Petama! The leader of the assembly of female benefactors and practitioners is one, The three village rituals of diviners, Bonpos, and astrologers are two, The gathering for eating, drinking, and seeking wealth is three, The deceptive little song is four. If one revolves around these four, even a fly can barely fly, Therefore, it is more auspicious to abandon the eight worldly concerns. Abandon the eight worldly concerns, Petama! The owner of the tall earthen fortress is one, The one who plows the long, narrow fields horizontally is two, The rivals among paternal brothers are three, The compassion among relatives and friends is four. If one does these four, even a fly can barely arrive, Therefore, it is more auspicious to abandon the eight worldly concerns. Abandon the eight worldly concerns, Petama! Keep the suffering of relatives and friends in mind, The attendant of the Lama accumulates virtuous deeds, The practitioner with leisure makes excuses and returns empty-handed, You, Aunt Peta, go and be a beggar!
