Moreover, it is crucial to motivate the mind towards virtue with a firm aspiration of faith in the Three Jewels, and to make every effort to prevent the mind from being mixed with afflictions repeatedly through mindfulness and awareness. When practicing supreme accomplishment, there is not much difference in which direction to face, but to symbolize the cessation of thoughts, one can face west, or conform to the lineage of the deity. Furthermore, in Guhyasamaja and other practices, Medha and other teachers say to face east, which symbolizes the father tantra. In Chakrasamvara practice, Lawapa and other masters say to face south, and in Vajravarahi practice it is said to face west, which symbolizes the mother tantra. Yamantaka is considered to face south. When practicing the four activities, face east for pacifying, north for increasing, west for subjugating, and south for wrathful activities. Primarily, one should focus on the clear appearance and pride of the deity, and single-mindedly engage in mantra recitation. If drowsiness or sleepiness occurs, raise the gaze. Intensify awareness and recite with the sound of the mantra. If the mind is scattered and cannot settle down, lower the gaze, focus on the meditation deity, and recite silently or mentally with one-pointed concentration. If there is no interest in clear appearance, cultivate faith, compassion, non-conceptualization, etc., and do not let the mind wander. If controlled by dullness, agitation, or distraction, it is said that power will be lost. From entering a session until the end, one must avoid sleeping, getting up, laughing, urinating or defecating, eating, talking to people, interrupting the sound of the mantra, not visualizing the deity and mantra wheel, and not performing the gathering and dispersing of light. In the practice of highest yoga, if the mind is not distracted, it is permissible to consume small amounts of drinks, etc. As the venerable Naropa said: Any yogi who wishes to generate the power of mantra should understand the conduct of mantra. When a yogi mantra practitioner recites mantras, do not converse with those who have broken vows, and do not wear the clothes of sinners. When the body is unwell, rest, purify the body, and meditate on the nature of reality. Abandon disbelief and laziness, do not recite mantras while lying down unwillingly, do not recite mantras while eating, do not recite mantras without rinsing the mouth, do not recite mantras without intention, do not recite mantras when the deity is not clear, and do not recite mantras under the control of sleep.

One should abandon unstable (vows). One should abandon unclear and loud mantra sounds (recitations). In times of peace, one should abandon fierceness. In times of fierceness, one should abandon peace. In times of empowerment, one should abandon peace. One should abandon transmitting mantra recitations to others. One should abandon gently reciting the practice mantra. At windy passes and great riverbanks, one should not recite fierce and profound mantras. One should abandon the sloppy writing of mantra syllables. For enemies, demons, diseases, etc., one should abandon focusing entirely on power. Do not transmit to unworthy vessels. One should abandon reciting secret mantras in towns and villages. For Kriya (Sanskrit: क्रिया, Kriyā, action) and other mantras, as well as mantras with insufficient syllables, etc., except for the Father Tantra and Mother Tantra, for others, meat, alcohol, women, and garlic, etc., should be abandoned, and cleanliness should be maintained. For those who want immediate power, one should recite with silence and counting. For those who want unsurpassed accomplishment, one should recite according to the scriptures until signs appear. For those who want Mahamudra, one should always clearly recite the union of the three. If one wants to quickly generate power, silent recitation increases accomplishment. Compared to reciting freely for a year, one month of silent recitation is more powerful. Compared to practicing in a city for a year, staying in a secluded place for a day is better. The yogi who practices mantras, if possessing these twenty-one instructions, longevity, excellence, and common accomplishments will be achieved. Thus it is said. Padampa Sangye's teachings say: If one does not recognize the five places of dissipation, then approach and accomplishment will become meaningless. The five key points are: If one puts aside the deity visualization, the deity of the body will dissipate. When reciting mantras, if one speaks before reaching the root mantra, the power of the mantra will dissipate. When reciting, if one does not perform the visualization of gathering and dispersing, samadhi will dissipate. If one encounters impurity before breaking the retreat, the signs of the deity will dissipate. If offerings and samaya substances, etc., are seen by others, the substances will dissipate. Furthermore, during approach and accomplishment, one should not give one's warm clothes to others. When visualizing the deity and in samadhi, one should abandon distractions such as noise. When reciting mantras, one should not blow on the fire. Before reciting a sufficient number of mantras, one should not chant for the sick and hail. Do not mix leftovers and clothes. After the rosary is blessed, do not pass it to others. Avoid impure people. Abandon the food and clothes of widows. Avoid the wealth of lepers. Do not embezzle the wealth of the Three Jewels. These should all be understood in detail. Furthermore, during approach and accomplishment, the essence of the body, bindu, must not be lost. If it is lost, one must protect it.
