Anger arising from such things is anger for one's own sake, and is called non-holy. If a disciple engages in negativity and does not act according to the Dharma, and the lama becomes displeased and angry, that is anger for the sake of others, and that is a holy lama. The Great Commentary says: 'Whichever lama's mind becomes disturbed for the sake of others, that is a holy lama. Whichever lama's mind becomes disturbed for his own sake, that is not a holy lama.' Thus it is said. For that holy lama, anger and rage, and thoughts of never benefiting him, etc., do not arise. Because he has conquered afflictions, and because he is the refuge of all sentient beings. Therefore, 'The Dharma I have taught has not been able to subdue this one! Alas!' That thought itself is called mental disturbance. But if one is violently disturbed by anger and the like, then one becomes non-holy. If one thinks that because there is not much disturbance, it will not become a root downfall, that is not correct. Because one hates with a tormenting mind the protector of all sentient beings, who has equanimity, who is peaceful like space. Disparaging such a holy lama is a root downfall, but disparaging a non-holy one is not the completion of the first root downfall, because it is not because the disciple has engaged in negativity that he is disturbed. The Great Commentary says: 'A lama who is engaged for his own sake is not one who is engaged in the ten non-virtues,' which is certain. Thus it is said. Although the object of the first root downfall is not fully complete for a non-holy one, it is not permissible to despise him. Because even if one abandons love for an ordinary sentient being, it is the fourth root downfall, so what need is there to say about one who has been made a lama? The thought is: Because one knows the lama as the lama, one does not mistakenly think of him as someone else, and one generates strong afflictions such as anger, and one harms or wants to despise him by looking at him as an enemy, and one generates it strongly from the depths of one's heart and does not restrain it. The Vajra Heart Ornament says: 'From the heart, reviling the teacher.' Thus it is said. The actual basis is: The Condensed Tantra says: 'If the mind of the glorious lama is disturbed, then the root downfalls of these sons will become like catching a rabbit.' Therefore, striking the body, or greatly reviling, or dividing the sangha, or destroying, etc.

It is to insult by showing extreme contempt through body and speech. The time is: Although it is impossible to abandon the (Guru's) mind in all circumstances, temporarily departing from the joy in (Guru's) mind is called making (Guru) displeased. When the first root downfall is completed, it is placed in a general aspect. Specifically, it is absolutely impossible to displease the minds of the accomplished and supreme Gurus. Since disrespecting the supreme Guru will not become a root downfall, accurately speaking, regardless of whether the Guru's mind is disturbed or not, pleased or not, from the disciple's own perspective, the ultimate thought of contempt arises, that is the time when it becomes the first root downfall. Because all good and non-good arise from one's own thoughts, not determined by external objects. When the ultimate thought of contempt arises, all the experiences and abilities in that disciple's continuum will disappear, and all undesirable things will occur. Therefore, it is not necessary to cling to the idea that the (Guru's) mind must be disturbed. The Kalachakra Root Tantra says: "Destroying the heart of the glorious Guru will turn into a rabbit catcher." And the previously quoted "From disturbing the mind," and "From slandering the Guru from the heart," and "Therefore, disrespecting him." But (the scriptures) say "making displeased," and "from disturbing the mind," and "from not pleasing the Guru from the heart," and "Therefore, from disrespecting him, that person becomes agitated." Because of this, and making displeased does not include occurrence, and disturbing does not include agitation, etc., and if one thinks that if the Guru is not displeased, it is not a root downfall, one will become less cautious, because there is an aspect that needs to be prevented. And for the subsequent downfalls that take a person as an object, the object also needs to know, because it would become necessary to disturb the mind. Therefore, it is not correct that Buton Chokyi Gyalpo places disturbing the mind at the ultimate time. Regarding the way of becoming a downfall, according to Jampal Drakpa's view, in the self-commentary it says: Driven by strong afflictions, knowing it there, not restraining the actions of body and speech, killing by separating the main practice from life, knowing and not regretting, rejoicing and not being confused, after all seven actions are complete, time has passed and one has failed.
