Pages 501 to 600. Pages 501 to 600. Complete. Later, Geshe Khyun Drak found the Indian version of the "Extensive Commentary" and translated it, boasting in Tibet that it was his own creation, which seems to have led to slander. However, Naksho and other later translators also translated it, and it is said to be an unparalleled treatise in India, which is recorded in many ancient documents, so it is a reliable treatise. Buton Chokyi Gyalpo believed that for those with sharp faculties, there is no need for the "Extensive Ritual" and so on, and merely being angry with the lama will cause (a root downfall), and repentance is also immediate repentance and restraint, and taking vows will restore it. For those with dull faculties, the "Extensive Ritual" is necessary, and it is said that purification is needed for six months, which needs to be examined. Even without the "Extensive Ritual," those with sharp faculties who know how to generate root downfalls are only sharp in their faculties regarding the way to generate root downfalls. In general, sharp faculties in Anuttarayoga refer to the easy realization of both vast means and profound wisdom. Such people, because their antidotes are swift and stable, do not fall into the cause of root downfalls. Even if they slightly slip due to strong circumstances, they will not enjoy its aftertaste from the depths of their hearts and continue to habituate it, but at the moment of awareness, the thought of the antidote does not leave their minds, so they immediately cut off the continuum and become vows, so for such people, root downfalls are very difficult to occur, so the above statement is reversed. You yourself also believe that in the case of the first root downfall, the branch of its cause is, as stated in the "Vajra Heart Ornament": "From the heart, reviling the teacher." Therefore, it is due to the drive of hatred or jealousy, reviling from the depths of the heart. This also contradicts the statement that a fierce "Extensive Ritual" is needed. In short, the yogi who has obtained the four empowerments in sequence and practices their path must act without violating the vows because the stream of his own view and meditative experience is not interrupted. Sometimes, due to the influence of strong causes of afflictions, etc., the object and subject are grasped as ordinary, causing the stream of experience to be interrupted, and unbearable strong afflictions of attachment, hatred, and ignorance arise in one's own continuum, and again, perverse thoughts arise.

Clinging to that very thing and not turning away from it is called a root downfall. Due to clinging to ordinary realms and those possessing realms, the view of mantra is severed. Due to the disappearance of experience, meditation is severed. Due to the arising of strong afflictions of attachment, aversion, and ignorance, the cause for falling into the lower realms is accumulated. These contradict what was previously vowed during empowerment, etc., thus breaking the samaya. Clinging to that very thing and insisting on not turning back, not entering confession, and if years and months, etc., pass in that state, then temporarily in this life, many undesirable things such as illness, weapons, and the king's punishment will occur, and the yogis who associate with it will also be stained by its influence, causing the decline of samadhi, etc., becoming a shadow of samaya. Having died and transmigrated, one is thrown into the lower realms and evil destinies, therefore it is called a root downfall. Not knowing such a key point, like the Hearers explaining that one is born into a form that is not Mind-Only, viewing the object of a root downfall as something else arising like a bubble is not correct. A root downfall is said to be when one's own lineage becomes non-mantric dharma. Some say that it must manifest in body and speech, but that is not the case for all, because merely having doubts about pure dharma, etc., causes one to fall. If one asks, didn't the Ocean of Samaya also say to rely on the union of body and speech? That is because, like the first and fourteenth, those that take a person as an object often require manifestation in either body or speech, so it is said in that context, as an example, but it is not said that all fourteen must manifest in body and speech. How to protect it? Knowing the lama to be the Buddha, not differentiating between the lama and the deity of the mandala, constantly generating devotion and praying, this primarily protects the first samaya, and incidentally protects all the root downfalls, because knowing all the Buddha's teachings to be the blessing of the lama, one protects the second and sixth. Knowing appearance and existence, the outer and inner world, to be the nature of the lama, one protects the third, fourth, seventh, eighth, tenth, twelfth, and fourteenth. The lama does not abide in characteristics such as form and formlessness, truth and falsehood, existence and non-existence, and does not cling to all characteristics.
