Just as the sage who speaks of patience, even when his limbs were cut into pieces by the king, could not make his mind of patience become disturbed, let alone harsh words, even if he were engaged in killing, the supreme yogis whose minds cannot be moved are harmed by being considered not to be the objects of the root downfall in this case. And the root downfall of abandoning loving-kindness must also be understood by that object. If that is the case, then when the Hearers and Solitary Realizers generate the thought of abandoning all other sentient beings, must all sentient beings know and generate the corresponding mind? For example, if a helpless animal is able to protect itself from fear, or even if it does not protect itself with an angry mind, must it necessarily know and generate the corresponding mind? The way to incur a downfall is: In general, the five defeats and so on are the same as the common ones. But for each one, if you are angry with a Vajra brother in particular, it is very heavy, and the others are gradually lighter, that is, being angry with just a Vajra brother becomes a misdeed and so on. If those who have entered the lower tantras are not suitable as Vajra brothers of the unsurpassed, then how can those who have entered the mandala of Guhyasamaja and so on be Vajra brothers of Hevajra and so on? If you think that it is suitable because it is the same as the unsurpassed, then the tantras such as the Garuda and the View are branches of the tantra of union, and because they are equally entered into the Vajrayana, they are even more suitable as Vajra brothers. The absence of downfall is: Here, there is no possibility of not incurring a downfall if you are angry out of hatred. However, if it is for the general benefit of that Vajra brother, or especially if you see the time to tame him, and you show something like a condemnation that pretends to be anger out of compassion, then there is no downfall. In short, since a yogi must see all containers and contents as pure, there is no object of anger. In particular, all those who have entered the teachings are Vajra brothers, and all those who abide in the Vajrayana should be known as Vajra brothers, so one should train in not being angry and in respectfully serving them. The fourth root downfall is: Its essence is: abandoning loving-kindness towards sentient beings, abandoning the mind of enlightenment with an angry mind, and thus entering the path of Hearers and Solitary Realizers. As it says: Abandoning loving-kindness towards sentient beings is the fourth root downfall. And as it says: Abandoning loving-kindness becomes the fourth. And as in the "Friendly Letter"

Regarding the object of abandonment, it is said: Abandoning sentient beings due to the absence of loving-kindness. The reason is that the perfectly enlightened Buddha arises from the mind of enlightenment, which in turn arises from compassion. Compassion arises from the cause of loving-kindness. If the cause of loving-kindness is abandoned, the fruits of compassion and the mind of enlightenment will be abandoned. In that case, one will fall away from all the paths of the Great Vehicle, and abandoning loving-kindness leads effortlessly to engaging in great harm. The objects are twofold: objects of anger and objects of abandonment. The objects of abandonment are: Abandoning individual sentient beings as the object and abandoning all sentient beings as the object. Even ferocious and cruel beasts cherish and hold dear their own wives and offspring. Therefore, it is impossible to be angry with all sentient beings simultaneously. Thus, even becoming angry and devoid of loving-kindness towards any one sentient being constitutes a root downfall. Abandoning individual sentient beings as the object is like this: For example, if I have bestowed great benefit upon someone, but instead of repaying my kindness, they harm me, even to the point of threatening my life, then I become devoid of loving-kindness and feel disgusted. Thinking, 'From now on, I will never help this person again, and I don't even want to see them,' I develop a firm resolve and abandon helping them. Abandoning all other sentient beings as the object is like this: Seeing sentient beings engaging in great misdeeds, I think, 'If I cannot even accomplish the benefit of this one person, how can I possibly accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings? Now I will seek peace for myself,' and abandoning all others, I give rise to the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer. The intention is to continuously desire to abandon out of hatred and anger, without turning back from that intention. The actual action is to turn away from loving-kindness due to the power of hateful aversion, abandoning out of hatred and firmly holding the thought of not giving help. Here, the Great Commentary says: There are four types of abandoning loving-kindness: small, medium, large, and very large. The small one is abandoning loving-kindness for just a moment and then reverting, like a line drawn on water with a stick. The medium one is like a line drawn on sand that is quickly smoothed out by the wind. The large one is
