Therefore, saying that volition is like the movement of wind, and that the other two are absent, refers to the coarse joy and bliss that arise in meditative concentration. Here, the third dhyana is divided into having five branches, as stated in the Abhidharmakosha: "The third has five: equanimity, mindfulness, correct awareness, joy, and abiding." This explanation refers to the subtle joy that is a benefit, so there is no contradiction. In short, the Two Examinations say: "Knowing the nature of poison, poison frightens poison, just as when one is seized by the wind, one gives the food of the Mon, beans, and mules." And so on. Also, it says: "Just as burning with fire, one burns with fire, likewise, the fire of desire, one burns with the fire of desire." As it is said, using desire as the path is the yoga of bliss, using hatred as the path is the yoga of clarity, using ignorance as the path is the yoga of non-conceptuality, and the non-dual is the yoga of Mahamudra. These four are the most excellent, supreme, and ultimate of all meditative concentrations. The secret instructions on how to manifest these are taught in the Vajrayana, while in a general way, both Sutra and Tantra teach them without difference. For example, the Sutra on the Transformation of Women speaks of the yoga of bliss, the Lankavatara Sutra speaks of the yoga of clarity, and the Samadhiraja Sutra speaks of non-conceptuality as the path. Many other sutras also explain this. In short, Tipupa said: "The bliss of desire is the cause of samsara, the bliss of meditative concentration is actual bliss, and the bliss of the path, which is similar to both but not either, is the practice of yogis. The bliss of the fruit to be attained—uncontaminated bliss—is beyond samsara and nirvana." Likewise, clarity and non-conceptuality should also be understood. In short, the so-called four dhyanas are not merely the individual concentrations of the gods of the form realm, but each aspect of dharma has limitless doors, and explaining them in this way is a wonderful manifestation of the Buddha. Similarly, the nine stages of mental abiding and the seven applications of mind are common to both Sutra and Tantra. As the Sutra Ornament says: "Having fixed the mind on the object, not letting it wander, quickly knowing when the mind wanders,

Therefore, one should cultivate again and again. The wise should further and further gather the mind inward. In order to see the qualities, one should gather the mind in samadhi. In order to see the faults of distraction, one should dislike it and pacify it. When greed, displeasure, and so on arise, one should pacify them in the same way. Therefore, one who is diligent in discipline should focus on the mind with manifest effort, and attain spontaneous arising. From habituation, one will not need to make effort. Thus, placing the mind inward, placing it correctly, gathering and placing it, placing it closely, taming it, pacifying it, closely pacifying it, making it a single stream, making it samadhi—these nine are taught. Moreover, here, in the context of either the generation stage or the completion stage, those who proceed first train the continuum and then direct the mind to the object of their own stage, which is placing it inward. Here, "inward" does not mean something like inside the body, because when meditating on the deity's form, placing it on the ornament of the crown of the head or between the eyes is also this very thing. Therefore, the consciousness that focuses is the "inward," and directing the consciousness that focuses to the object of focus is called placing it inward. If it does not abide there, then one should make it even more subtle and gather it into one, which is the second, placing it correctly. Not giving attention to external objects or other things is the third, gathering and placing it. Gathering it even more subtly into one is the fourth, placing it closely. If it wanders, one should recognize that wandering as a fault and gather it again, which is the fifth, taming it. If afflictions and secondary afflictions arise, one should remember their faults and turn away from them and gather it, which is the sixth, pacifying it. Even when subtle secondary afflictions such as forgetfulness, laziness, and displeasure arise, one should recognize them, remember their faults, and turn them back, then gather the mind to the object, which is the seventh, closely pacifying it. Placing it in one-pointedness without interruption by other thoughts is the eighth, making it a single stream. What is the result of striving for these? Without effort, it will naturally abide in one-pointedness, which is the ninth, making it samadhi. Thus, having attained one-pointedness of mind on the object through the nine methods of abiding the mind, one should cultivate meditative concentration in order to further develop it.
