Clinging to coarse views is contrary to the fourth empowerment's samaya. How could one diligently reverse and act contrary to these precepts? If a beginner despises the vows of the three vehicles, it is because of clinging to inherent existence and ordinary conceptualizations. Moreover, knowingly disregarding the Buddha's teachings constitutes the second root downfall. Doubting the complete purity of all phenomena leads to the ninth root downfall. Holding one thing as inferior and another as superior in the naturally peaceful and pure essence of all phenomena results in the eleventh root downfall; these three occur simultaneously. A practitioner with root downfalls is a laughingstock even for children. However, does the explanation of liberation from precepts here refer to engaging in practices like those of a Shravaka Bhikshu or Bhikshuni, or does it refer to other yogis? If the former, Atisha's "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment" states, "Because it is strongly prohibited, renunciates should not take the secret and wisdom empowerments." This indicates that the secret and wisdom empowerments are contrary to the vows of a renunciate, and therefore should not be taken. A practitioner without complete empowerment is impossible, which contradicts this. If the latter, it is unreasonable to discuss whether a yogi who has entered the Shravaka vows has broken or not broken those vows; this is a point of doubt for the discerning. Regarding this, Buton Chokyi Gyalpo said that when a guru engages in union for the sake of secret empowerment, it does not become a root downfall for the disciple, and there is no mention in the Vinaya that drinking bindu becomes a root downfall. By saying this indirectly, he seems to be refuting Atisha, but Atisha's words were because at that time in Tibet, there were not many who had the capacity for tantra, and many were merely imitating tantric practices superficially. To correct them, he spoke with a specific intention, and to protect the common teachings, he stated that one should not take higher empowerments that rely on material substances. By using the Kalachakra as a source, it is easy to understand that it is not a complete prohibition, because there it describes two ways of bestowing empowerment on a Bhikshu: with detachment and with attachment.

This is to explain these differences. Regarding this, generally, the Pratimoksha vows of the common Vinaya, the Bodhisattva vows of the Paramita Vehicle, and the Mantra vows obtained through empowerment of Anuttara Tantra, how do these three vows exist when taken sequentially by one person? Acharya Abhayakara considers them to be like a golden head ornament, a necklace, and anklets, all made of gold but different in shape and position. This is consistent with Drikung Jigten Gonpo's statement that "the three vows are of the same essence, but three different due to the change of the owner," like a piece of jade gradually worn around the necks of an ordinary person, a minister, and a king. Generally, just in terms of vows, the essence is the same, but due to the basis, they are described as inferior and superior. Panchen Vibhuticandra believes that just as when stars, the moon, and the sun rise in sequence, the light of the latter overwhelms the light of the former, the vows also suppress each other or gradually diminish. Furthermore, it is forbidden in the Garland of Light to give the latter of the three vows without obtaining the former. In addition, some say that the three vows are like land, water, and a boat, as a foundation and support, which is a mistaken view. Through these prohibitions, the great self-master Ashvaghosa and the teacher Kandarpa Vajra, etc., distinguish this meaning in various ways. They say that those with sharp faculties can enter the Mantra vows simultaneously, those with medium faculties enter from the Bodhisattva vows, and those with dull faculties enter sequentially. Some later Tibetans say that one must enter only in the order of "first performing Uposatha and giving alms," which is like riding a horse and forgetting the horse itself. Because the Bhagavan said, "What should be used to tame sentient beings who are without merit and difficult to tame? First perform Uposatha and give alms." Therefore, if one is qualified to receive the Mantra, then it is universally acknowledged that he is the object referred to by "sentient beings who are without merit and difficult to tame," which would become a vow that can be boasted about in the world. Therefore, the first chapter shows that qualified individuals can enter simultaneously, and then later it explains how to tame those who cannot be tamed in this way and have many conceptual thoughts. The Sakya fathers and sons obtained the above view through the authority of the Gyübum.
