Thus, for the sake of easy understanding, the general practice of the path of application has been explained. Now, the individual practices will be explained. As it says in that (tantra): Until almost no sign of slight heat is obtained, striving single-mindedly is the practice of Samantabhadra. In the Two Examinations Tantra, it says: Like the flow of a river rushing, like the tip of a lamp flame tightly bound, the yogi should always be like that, abiding equally day and night. Thus it is. Then, the secret practice: In places that are frightening and capable of increasing courage, such as charnel grounds and single trees, one should wander with hidden asceticism, blending desire into great bliss, blending hatred into emptiness, blending ignorance into clear light, and blending all appearances into wisdom. By meditating in this way, one will obtain intermediate and great heat. The duration is that the superior faculty achieves it in one month. As it says in the Two Examinations Tantra: In one month, the fortunate one will be transformed; there is no doubt about this. Thus it says. One should practice secretly for one month, until the mudra (consort) is not found. For the mantra practitioner who can obtain blessings, it should be shown by the yogini. Thus it says, one month will obtain prophecy, and if it is not obtained, then one should practice until the yogini does not give help or prophecy. The third is the practice of the asceticism of awareness: Thus, examine the limits of practice. Now, the actual practice spoken of in the scriptures and instructions, the practice of the asceticism of awareness, will be explained. Moreover, in order to be brief and clear, the essence will be extracted from the tantra of the Two Examinations of Hevajra and explained. So, when should the practice be done? When great heat is obtained. As it says: When a little heat is obtained, if one wants to practice, if one wants to achieve, one should practice this practice. Thus it says. Here, some think that the word "a little" indicates that even with slight or intermediate heat, one can practice. It is not so, because at this time, Naropa's Great Commentary says: Once heat is obtained, one should practice the powerful actions that transcend the world. Thus, and it quotes the words of the Two Examinations Tantra itself: Is the mind stable or wavering? One should examine one's own mind separately. Having power by virtue of that (heat) means that great heat is able to produce the fruit of benefit and harm, and whether one's own mind is stable.

Through observation, if one obtains a moderate warmth that is not harmed by afflictions, and a great warmth that is capable of subduing others, it is easy to recognize the stability of the continuum. In the context of the practices of the Mother Tantra, if one practices without the ability to subdue others, it is said that one will become an object of ridicule for people. If one wishes to practice, if one wishes to achieve, what is said in this way with the tone of choice refers to the actual, well-known practice with signs, meaning if one wishes to engage in practice with signs. Here, since it is impossible not to engage in any of the practices with signs, without signs, and extremely without signs, it does not refer to general wisdom practice. In the Compendium of Practices, it says: Without the practice of an ascetic, it is impossible to exhaust the habitual tendencies of afflictions that have no beginning, as the scriptures say and as it is known in the world. Regarding the differences between these three practices, like a precious ornament, the purity of the mandala of the Mother of No-Self, surrounded by fifteen companions, is with signs; the purity of the mandala of the Essence, surrounded by nine, eight, five, or four, is without signs; the purity of the main deity, accompanied by only one companion, is extremely without signs. Other things like ornaments are said to have no difference, which means that only the practice with signs is divided into three, as it is said in union practices and so on. Generally, the wisdom practice that is divided into three does not refer to without signs and extremely without signs. Therefore, in the Compendium of Practices, it says: Thus, the practice of a Bodhisattva born from desire is of three kinds: with signs, without signs, and extremely without signs. Among these, what is the practice with signs? For example, the exhaling of the Tathagata and the exhaling of Vajradhara, as it is shown, the flourishing of the Arali of the Tathagatas, that is with signs. What is the practice without signs? From the state of being constantly pervasive, enjoying some things out of necessity, that is without signs. What is extremely without signs? Completely abandoning all busyness, taking meditation as food, and dwelling in some places.
