Some ḍamaru in India are covered with heart skin, and some are seen covered with brain matter. The vajra and bell are also characterized, but I will not write much about them here. Some say that the ḍamaru and bell should not be played together, because both are wisdom. It seems that they remember the saying, "Wisdom is the sound of the ḍamaru," but this is just speculation, a statement devoid of analysis. Because that very statement first says, "The form of skillful means is the cymbal, the sound of wisdom is the ḍamaru." Therefore, the form of the cymbal is a part of skillful means, and its sound is wisdom, thus explaining that skillful means and wisdom are inseparable. This also applies to the vajra, where it is explained that one side of the horns represents the purification of samsara, and the other side of the horns represents the purification of nirvana, thus establishing skillful means and wisdom. For the bell, it is also explained that the mouth of the clapper is wisdom, the half-vajra is skillful means, the inner cavity is wisdom, and the striking tongue becomes skillful means, so the vajra and bell should not be held together. Furthermore, the khatvanga of the father represents wisdom, and when the mother holds it, it represents skillful means, so it is unreasonable for the third pair of hands of Chakrasamvara to hold the ḍamaru and khatvanga. You have said in the tantras that the yoginis should hold the khatvanga in their right hand and the ḍamaru in their left hand. Therefore, skillful means and wisdom are understood to change temporarily according to the power of dependent origination, such as thoughts and needs, and should not be grasped like the pillar and vase in logic. However, in the case of the Blessed Mother, apart from the general vows, it is not absolutely necessary to have a bell in the music, because the oral instructions do not say to offer praise with the ḍamaru and cymbals during breaks. In India, yogis also do this during tsokhorlo. As it is said in the tsok song of Jetsun Marpa: "The venerable Naropa, the great pandita, held the vajra and bell in his hands, in the sky about a cubit away, with his right arm extended, he dwells in a dancing posture. Other male and female yogis, playing the ḍamaru with their right hand, holding the cymbals with their left hand, I saw them frolicking in a dancing manner." Thus it is said. In the presence of the Tathagata, at this time, bless the five aggregates, the twelve sources, and the eighteen elements.
