Those who have stable samadhi of yoga are the extraordinary signs of the supreme Dharma of the path of joining. Likewise, the signs of the path of joining can also be summarized here into three heats. As it is said in the "Two Examinations": "Fear, madness, and likewise suffering, sorrow, grief, and harm, great attachment, hatred, and ignorance, the practitioner himself is not afflicted by afflictions, the fruits of benefit and harm arise." Therefore, those who are not harmed by things that are known as places of fear in the world, such as fire, water, and fierce beasts, are fearless. Those who cannot be driven mad by intoxicating substances such as alcohol and dhatura. Likewise, those who do not suffer from poverty of food and clothing. Those who are not harmed by the grief of losing relatives and friends. Those who are not harmed by diseases such as wind, bile, and phlegm, and by spirits such as gods and nagas, are signs of small heat. Even very great causes of the three poisons cannot shake the mind, which is a sign of medium heat. The accomplishment of the mantra of speech, such as healing from illness just by saying "May you be healed," and the accomplishment of the way of looking as stated in "One with an uneven brow," etc. Regarding this, Jema Mar Ngok considers the four ways of looking at cutting off as the way of looking at consciousness, and the four ways of looking at following as the way of looking at wisdom, making eight in total. Killing, stiffening, expelling, and falling are the ways of looking at consciousness. Healing, liberating, summoning, and returning are the ways of looking at following. By accomplishing these, cutting off shows fear, and following brings peace, which is the accomplishment of the way of looking. Thus, whatever benefit or harm is desired, the ability to manifest its result is a sign of great heat. These heats are not referred to as the heats divided by heat, peak, forbearance, and supreme. Rather, all the paths of joining are gathered into one, and from there, the terms small, medium, and large heat are used for the small, medium, and large abilities to engage in awareness practice. The definition of heat is the same, as it is said to be the precursor to the arising of non-conceptual wisdom like fire. Thus, for the sake of easy understanding, the path of joining

Generally speaking, now we will discuss the specific practices. As it says therein: Until almost obtaining the sign of small heat, striving single-mindedly is the practice of Samantabhadra. In the "Two Examinations" it says: 'Like the continuous flow of a river, and the flame of a lamp tightly bound, the yogi should always, day and night, remain in equanimity.' Next is the secret practice: In places like charnel grounds and solitary trees, which are frightening and capable of increasing courage, one wanders with hidden asceticism, blending desire into great bliss, blending hatred into emptiness, blending ignorance into clear light, and blending whatever appears into wisdom. By meditating in this way, one will obtain intermediate and great heat. The duration is that the superior faculties accomplish it in one month. In the "Two Examinations" it says: 'In one month, the fortunate one will change; there is no doubt about this.' And: 'Practice secretly for one month, until the mudra is not found. The yogini should show the mantra practitioner who will receive the blessing.' Therefore, one will obtain prophecy in one month, and if one does not obtain it, one should practice until the yogini does not give the prophecy of help. The third is the practice of knowledge and asceticism: Having examined the limits of such practice, now we will explain the actual practice of knowledge and asceticism as taught in the scriptures and instructions. Also, for the sake of brevity and clarity, we will extract the essence from the tantra of the "Two Examinations" of Hevajra and explain it. So, when should one perform the practice? When great heat is obtained. 'When a little heat is obtained, if one desires to perform the practice, if one desires to achieve accomplishment, then one should practice this practice.' Here, one might think that the word 'a little' indicates that even with small or intermediate heat one can perform the practice, but that is not the case. In this context, Naropa's "Great Commentary" says: 'As long as heat is obtained, then one should perform the powerful supramundane practice.' And so on. And it quotes the "Two Examinations" itself: 'Is the mind stable or wavering? Examine your own mind separately.' By saying that it has power, it produces the fruit of benefit and harm, obtaining great heat, and by examining whether one's own mind is stable or not, one will not be harmed by afflictions.
