These are not to be practiced. When learning to read and write, one must start with each vowel and consonant letter, because one is afraid of forgetting, but it is not like that after mastering them. Similarly, meditating on the unborn, wind-mind, non-dual Mahamudra is to abide in the very nature of mind that has been understood through the blessing of the guru, and not to abide in the mind, which is said to be the same in essence as mind, intellect, and consciousness, nor to abide in any of the fifty-one mental factors that arise as subordinates of the mind. Because the nature of Mahamudra is that the Blessed Mother holds a garland of wet human heads that have severed the life of the fifty-one mental factors. If someone asks: Then, are virtuous mental factors such as mindfulness and samadhi also not needed? All these mental factors arise primarily as subordinates of the mind. And the main mind is said to be the same in essence as mind, intellect, and consciousness, with the alaya-consciousness as its object, inseparable from ego-grasping, having contact, attention, feeling, ideation, etc., in short, referring to the part of the mind that acts. This, in the Mahayana, is the consciousness that is divided into consciousness and wisdom, the phenomenon that is divided into phenomenon and suchness, the conventional truth that is divided into the two truths, and the extreme that is divided into extreme and middle. Kyabje Rangjung Dorje said: This is the impure mind that is divided into pure and impure minds. Therefore, mindfulness and samadhi, which are similarly associated with this, do not go beyond intellect and attention, and the only thing that hinders the seeing of the pure mind itself is the flow of mind and mental factors. Therefore, Chandrakirti said: The cessation of mind is the manifestation of the body. And it is said that for the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the flow of mind and what arises from mind has completely ceased. Gangama said: By the dharma of intellect, the meaning beyond intellect is not understood. In the tantras it is said: That which has no beginning, no middle, no end, no self, nor other, no existence, nor nirvana, this is the supreme great bliss. Thus it is extensively taught. However, other than this (Mahamudra) itself, one cannot find the pure mind elsewhere, just as butter is extracted from milk, silver from silver ore, and sesame oil from sesame seeds.
