To say that it is non-dual refers to the coarse joy and bliss that arise as a fault of meditation. Here, the third [dhyana] is said to have five branches, as stated in the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa]: "The third has five: equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, bliss, and abiding." This is said to refer to the subtle bliss that is a benefit, so there is no contradiction. In short, the Two Examinations [Tattvasiddhi] states: "Knowing the nature of poison, poison overcomes poison. Just as when one is seized by the wind, one gives the donkey food of Mon mustard." And so on. It also says: "Just as when cooking is burned, it is burned by fire itself. Likewise, when burned by the fire of desire, it is burned by the fire of desire." As it is said, transforming desire into the path is the yoga of bliss; transforming hatred into the path is the yoga of clarity; transforming ignorance into the path is the yoga of non-conceptuality; and the non-differentiated is the Great Seal yoga. These four are the best, most excellent, and highest of all meditative samadhis. The secret meaning of the oral instructions on how to manifest this is taught in the Vajra Vehicle. In terms of the general meaning, it is taught without difference in both Sutra and Tantra. In the Sutra on the Transformation of Women, the yoga of bliss is mentioned; in the Lankavatara, the yoga of clarity is mentioned; and in the King of Samadhis, non-conceptuality is said to be the path. Many other sutras also teach this. In short, Tipupa said: "The bliss of desire is the cause of samsara; the bliss of meditation is true bliss; the bliss of the path, which is the common cause that is similar to both but not both, is the object of meditation for yogis; and the bliss of the uncontaminated fruit to be attained is beyond existence and peace." As it is said, clarity and non-conceptuality should also be understood in this way. In short, the so-called four dhyanas should not be regarded merely as the self-absorbed samadhi of the gods of the Form Realm. Rather, each aspect of the Dharma has infinite doors, and teaching in this way is a miraculous manifestation of the Buddha. Similarly, the nine methods of abiding the mind and the seven close-gathering mental activities are common to both Sutra and Tantra. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras [Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra]: "Having fixed the mind on the object, do not let its continuity be distracted. Having quickly realized the distraction, the wise should immediately bring it back, turning it even more."

Then further, the mind should be gathered inwards. In order to see the qualities, gather the mind into samadhi. In order to see the faults of distraction, dislike it and pacify it. When greed and displeasure, etc., arise, pacify them in the same way. Then, the one who strives in discipline, with manifest effort towards the mind, obtains the state of arising naturally, and from habituation, effort is not needed. Thus it is said, placing the mind within, placing it correctly, gathering and placing it, closely placing it, taming it, pacifying it, closely pacifying it, making it one stream, making it samadhi, these nine are taught. Also, here, in the context of either generation or completion stage, those who go before first tame their own mind-stream, and then focus the mind on the object of their own practice, this is placing it within. Here, "within" does not mean the inside of the body, because when meditating on the deity's form, placing it on the ornament of the crown of the head and between the eyes, etc., is also this. Therefore, the consciousness that apprehends is the within, and focusing the consciousness that apprehends on the object to be apprehended is called placing it within. If it does not remain there, then even more subtle, gathering the mind into one and placing it, this is the second, placing it correctly. Not giving away attention to external objects, etc., is the third, gathering and placing it. Gathering it even more subtly into one, this is the fourth, closely placing it. If it scatters, then recognizing the scattering as a fault and gathering it again, this is the fifth, taming it. If afflictions and near-afflictions, etc., arise, then remembering their faults, turning back from them and gathering it, this is the sixth, pacifying it. Even when subtle near-afflictions such as forgetfulness, laziness, and displeasure arise, recognizing them, remembering the faults and dispelling them, and then gathering the mind on the object, this is the seventh, closely pacifying it. Without being interrupted by other thoughts, focusing single-pointedly on the object, this is the eighth, making it one stream. What is the result of striving for these? It is that without effort, it will naturally remain in one point, this is the ninth, making it samadhi. Thus, through the nine methods of abiding in the mind, having obtained single-pointedness of mind on the object, in order to further develop it, meditate on the preliminary practices of dhyana. In the Ornament of Sutras it says:
