Think fairly. If all the scriptural authorities of faith are distorted according to one's own desires, what is the use of scriptural authority? Who will trust scriptural authority in the future? Therefore, engaging in evil sectarianism causes this root downfall to occur continuously, so it is crucial to abandon them and follow a qualified lama. The time: is precisely when clinging to signs. The way of falling: Here, there are no different ways of falling, such as gross ones, because all clinging to signs is immediately included in the category of "name" and established as a root downfall. Non-downfall: Here, there is no possibility of non-downfall for clinging to signs, because there is no clinging to signs that does not obscure the true nature. However, there is no downfall in showing others something like a sign for the sake of taming beings. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: "If names were not given, all the world would be deluded. Therefore, to abandon delusion, the Guide gave names." In short, all names, words, terms, and signs are merely imputed by conceptual thought. External objects, etc., are known through sensory perception, but conceptual thought cannot directly know them. Needless to say, the ultimate truth is beyond the scope of the senses. If one understands that the nature of reality is not measurable by conceptual thought, then it will be easier to protect this root downfall. If one sees conceptual thought itself as the face of reality, then one cannot practice the signless, nor can one abandon signs. Those yogis who are free from arrogance are completely victorious over this root downfall. This is not something to be confessed to others. Even if the mind of clinging to signs arises like a bubble in the first moment, immediately afterwards, even the subtle focus on the concepts of downfall and non-downfall, signs and signlessness, etc., effortlessly dissolves into the vast expanse of the nature of reality. This alone is the true confession, vow, and restoration here. If one is distracted by signs such as regret, confession, and suffering, then one makes the root downfall even more solid than before, and one does not recover, because pouring the water of clinging to signs does not revive the small spark of the tathagatagarbha. This explanation is written with the essential points of the instructions of this lineage.

Therefore, for those who are inconspicuous, it should be kept secret from logicians. Regarding the twelfth root downfall, its nature is: causing others with faith to be discouraged by the unsurpassed mantra, which is a serious downfall. As the sutra says: For sentient beings who have faith, causing their minds to be discouraged is the twelfth. Also, as the "Ornament of the Heart" says: Discouraging the minds of those with faith. The reason is: the activity of the Mahayana is to benefit others, and if others are discouraged, then one loses the mind of benefiting others, and because of this, one also loses self-benefit. The object is: those who have faith in other religions. The intention is: knowingly wanting to discourage them. The actual action is divided into two: the yogi is without fault, but because of attachment and aversion, slanders others, causing that sentient being to no longer trust oneself, that is: speaking badly of pure sentient beings, like the sun. Also, as the "Great Commentary" says: To pure sentient beings, that is, speaking badly of the yogi, then it becomes the twelfth. The yogi is also limited to other (situations), therefore this does not repeat with the third root downfall, because the former is anger due to strong hatred, while the latter is the difference of speaking badly due to slight jealousy. Another view is the view of the "Extensive Commentary" and the "Self Commentary", that is, for those with faith who want the Dharma, proclaiming the Dharma that they cannot understand, such as emptiness or no-self, causing them to distrust the secret Dharma. Some think that for those who want the secret Dharma, not giving the proclamation causes them to be discouraged. The time is: when that sentient being feels discouraged. The way of transformation is: if one does not trust the mantra, then it is a defeat; if one does not trust the sutra of characteristics, then it is a gross offense; if one does not trust the Dharma of the Hearers, then it is considered an evil deed. However, generating distrust in the Dharma of mantra, the way this does not repeat with the seventh root downfall is that the former is wanting to proclaim the secret, while the latter is wanting to discourage them, their motivations are different. If one does not want to discourage them, but because one does not understand the inclinations of the trainees, giving the proclamation with a compassionate mind causes them to be discouraged, then it also becomes a gross offense, and if slight distrust arises, then it is an evil deed. The situation where there is no downfall is: seeing that the sentient being needs to be subdued, temporarily punishing them, or seeing that it is beneficial to many people, discouraging one person, and then using methods to gather them, etc., then there is no downfall. In short, one should proclaim the corresponding Dharma as much as possible according to the inclinations and capacities of the trainees.
