It is the thought. The object is: the Dharma-nature of all dharmas, the ultimate truth, namely, the dharmas that are free from names, etc. And the *Gur* says: Dharma-nature. The thought is: it arises from the power of evil sectarianism, or disbelief in oral instructions, or inverted habitual patterns, etc. The main point is: regarding the suchness of the basis of all dharmas, and the correct view of the noble ones on the path, and the state of meditative equipoise, and the realization of ultimate truth in the subsequent attainment, and the suchness of the Buddhas of the fruition, thinking, "This is emptiness," or "It is not emptiness," or "It is union," or "It is not accepted," or "It is permanent," or "It is solid," etc., and holding onto these with the mind. In short, no matter what one focuses on and clings to, it is ultimately a view of clinging to extremes. This is the root downfall. The Great Commentary says: "Whatever does not realize the suchness of the Thus-Gone One is called fierce, and is the eleventh." This is explained from the perspective of the suchness of the fruition. The *Heart Ornament* says: "Conceptualizing emptiness as nihilistic." This refers to clinging to the literal meaning of one aspect of the explanation of emptiness, thinking that the nature of all dharmas is emptiness, devoid of anything, and thus conceptualizing it nihilistically. By explicitly mentioning the view of the path stage and clinging to the characteristics of annihilation in meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment, it can also encompass all extreme clinging to the characteristics of permanence and duality, and because of the force of clinging to the characteristics of the path and fruition, it can also encompass clinging to the characteristics of the suchness of the basis. However, if one also manifestly clings to the basis, path, and fruition themselves, then that itself will also become a root downfall, because the distinctions of situations are made nominally for the sake of taming beings, but the nature of dharmas is also free from the imputation of basis, path, and fruition. If one clings to the idea that it is free from all imputations, it is still a root downfall, because clinging to freedom requires the dharma to be freed from, the basis from which it is freed, the state in which it is freed, the time at which it is freed, the situation of having been freed, etc., the chain of conceptualizations of the three spheres, which requires fabrication, and there is no other clinging to characteristics that is superior to this. If one thinks that all clinging to characteristics is a root downfall, so one does not cling to characteristics, or if one affirms that characteristics cannot be grasped,

If one thinks, "Because it has faults, I do not accept it," or "There is nothing to accept," even thinking that is a root downfall because it is grasping at a sign. Object and subject are only taught from the perspective of what trainees see in specific situations. The difference between object and subject never enters into reality. Regarding ultimate truth, if one clings to the object of grasping or not grasping at signs, of accepting or not accepting, and the object of the one who grasps at signs and the one who does not, thinking that grasping at signs or accepting is a fault, and not grasping or not accepting is a virtue, like that, the clinging to the three spheres, because one knows these things but they remain in the heart as if one does not understand, thereby causing the arising of the clinging of "not grasping at signs, not accepting." In short, Nāgārjuna said, "Those of small intellect who view things as existing or non-existing, by that view they do not see the object of view, the peace of nirvana." And, "To say 'exists' is to grasp at permanence, to say 'does not exist' is to fall to annihilation, therefore the wise should not abide in existence or non-existence." And, "Those who make elaborations on the Buddha who is beyond elaborations, in the endless, all those who are diminished by elaborations will not see the Tathāgata." Just as these are said, one should not abide in grasping at existence or non-existence, and accepting or not accepting. Some great scholars say that one should accept the middle of existence and non-existence, and abide in that, because that is great other-emptiness. However, in the sutras and tantras, one only sees teachings such as, "The wise do not abide even in the middle." Some think that one should not abide in anything, but what is the difference? Because in grasping at reality they are the same. So, should one block all mental activity and only meditate on non-conceptuality? It is not like that, because if one blocks mental activity, that itself is very great mental activity. And, how could there be a path to liberation with only contaminated non-conceptuality? Temporary forgetfulness and confusion, such as fainting, sleep, being bewildered by drugs, and death, occur many times to sentient beings. When meditating on the path, if awareness remains in a state of half-clarity and half-obscurity, that is a very great place to go astray. The Indian saint said, one should not abandon a horse that is drowsy, but one should abandon the plow when the ox is drowsy.
