Just as not accepting (the guru) makes him unhappy, not accomplishing non-Dharmic instructions, and with good intention doing medical treatments beneficial to the body, but instead becoming unsuitable and turning into a fault, etc., from the beginning there is no downfall, because all dharmas depend on the mind. This refers to the state where the mind's thoughts are completely pure, without the slightest fault, and possessing faith. For accomplished and holy gurus, even joking or jesting, one should not do anything that goes against their mind, because even instructions that appear unwholesome, if carried out, will turn into great meaning, and it is impossible for instructions without great meaning to arise. For example, Jetsün Götsangpa (Rgod-tshang-pa) said to a patron who didn't understand something slightly, "Now lift up my yellow army," because they didn't lift it up, many monks were crushed by an avalanche; and he said, "Burn down that big house on the mountain over there," because they didn't burn it, if they had burned it, the parapet would have been built as vast as smoke, now it can only be built as small as a Smin-khyung. Examples like this are countless in this lineage. Therefore, since the root of all accomplishments is the guru, one should strive for strong trust and devotion, and practice guru yoga in four or six sessions, etc., so as not to be defiled by this root downfall. The second root downfall, its nature is: a mantra practitioner knowingly and intentionally disrespectfully transgressing the teachings of the Buddhas and teachings like the guru's Dharma, this is the nature. As it is said in the scriptures: "Transgressing the Sugata's teachings, is the second root downfall." And "Transgressing his teachings will transform" etc. The reason is: all the teachings of the Buddhas are the cause for placing sentient beings in higher realms and definite goodness, they are unique and undifferentiated; and accomplishments depend on the guru's instructions. The object is: all the true teachings of the Buddhas such as the Three Vehicles, and the valid treatises are also the same as the teachings. As the Uttaratantra says: "Also like the instructions of a sage, place it on the crown of the head." The guru is the nature of all the Buddhas, therefore his instructions are no different from the instructions of the Buddhas, if one transgresses them, one will fall into unwholesomeness. The intention is: clearly knowing that it is an instruction and not being mistaken, disrespectfully despising it.

The explanation is complete. The main text is: Like saying in the Vinaya Sutra, "Although it is said like this, it is just saying it," using clear degrading language to indicate to others, or thinking like this in one's own mind. The time is: If there is an opponent, the opponent understands the meaning; even if there is no opponent, when one's own thoughts are finally determined, one will commit this root downfall. The way of transformation is: Generally speaking, having seven branches leads to a root downfall, and confessing before the time limit expires leads to a downfall. For example, "You should not kill sentient beings," like this, clinging to the literal meaning, and saying "You should kill sentient beings," like this, slandering those with hidden meanings, commits a gross offense. If other branches are incomplete, and slight fabrications are made because they do not conform to one's own mind, then an offense of wrong-doing is committed. Although it is the same as a root downfall, the Mahayana sutras and tantras, the Hinayana sutras, and the teachings that only show the methods of higher rebirth, from the perspective of the object, the former is slightly heavier than the latter, because there is a difference between the near cause and the far cause. The situation of not committing a downfall is: When others ask questions, answering with different names, or distinguishing between definitive and provisional meanings, or seeing the special need to subdue others and speaking as if degrading, there is no fault in just speaking like this. Therefore, one should equally respect all the teachings of the Buddha, and even in the subtle points, one should remember their inconceivable aspects. By understanding the six extremes and four modes, and the key points of hidden meanings, one should apply them in different situations, and one should not despise all the subtle precepts. Although this is the case, disputes such as whether "Ra Li" is a tantra, and whether the "Buddha Topknot Nine Mothers Sutra" is a sutra, are regarded as characteristics of scholars by later Tibetans, but this root downfall and the act of abandoning the Dharma are very easy to arise, so scholars other than those with the eye of Dharma and the supernormal powers of the noble ones should not engage in these debates. The third root downfall, the essence is: being angry with a Vajra friend out of hatred. That is, "Being angry with a Vajra friend is the third wrong action," and "Indeed, being angry with a friend becomes the third." The Vajra Heart Ornament says, "Hatred destroys the relationship with friends." The reason is: because they are companions in achieving realization, and sins like hatred.
