Thinking, "This person should not do the Uposatha together," in order to expel him from the community, and to perform the four karmas, when the ghanta (gandi) was struck to assemble the Sangha, the Blessed One showed his own sphere of activity and said, "Make the great Shravakas happy!" Through the power of Samadhi, Manjushri saw that in the boundless Buddha-fields, Manjushris were dwelling before each Buddha, and all were like himself, striking the ghanta in order to expel that person. The Teacher asked, "You, Manjushri, which of these Manjushris are you going to expel?" He was ashamed and wanted to drop the ghanta, but he could not drop it, and the sound did not stop. He then said to the Blessed One, "I, possessing one-sided knowledge, because I did not understand the immeasurable sphere of activity of the Bodhisattvas, began to expel him. Please forgive me for becoming Manjushri Kumara!" After he said this, the sound stopped. The Teacher said, "All these Manjushris, so many, are dwelling in the homes of laypeople during the summer retreat by the power of taming!" Manjushri, from the retinue of the queen of Gsalgyal, placed five hundred each of queens, men, women, boys, girls, and prostitutes in the state of non-retrogression. Many were tamed into Shravakas. Question: By what Dharma were they tamed? Answer: Ask Manjushri himself. He said: Such beings cannot be fully matured by teaching the Dharma. Why is that? Because there are some beings who are fully matured by joyful play. There are also those who are fully matured by grasping, punishing, giving, poverty and destitution, and benefiting from great arrangements, and so on. So it was said. In the biography of Norzang, it is recorded that the spiritual friend of the Bhagavati goddess, using the term "selling beauty," when people came for the sake of desire, some, merely by looking, gave rise to the door of Samadhi, and thus entered the state of non-retrogression. Similarly, it is said that through speaking, grasping, being alone, embracing, and so on, different doors of Samadhi arise, and merely through these, they enter the state of non-retrogression. It is said that in Tibet, a person named Chokro Monpa, merely by seeing the holy Indian, received blessings and cut the bonds of conceptualization.

Many disciples of Je Gampopa attained realization of Mahamudra simply by seeing Gampo Mountain. Similarly, many attained realization of Mahamudra simply by seeing his body, hearing his voice, or even without meeting him, just by praying. There are countless such examples in this practice lineage. So, how should one view the guru? In the Vajra Dakini Tantra, it is said: "How should one view such a guru?" The Buddha taught: "He is the nature body of all Buddhas, his limbs are Bodhisattvas, all his pores are Arhats, the crown of his head is the five Buddha families, worldly beings are the seat of his feet, his radiance is Yakshas and so on. Yogis should always view the guru with such qualities of nature." That is, one should view the guru as the embodiment of all jewels. As mentioned sporadically in the tantras, summarized as in the "Fifty Verses on the Guru": the mind should be stable and unwavering, the speech should be pleasant, timely, and truthful, and frank and straightforward. All faults of body, speech, and mind should be restrained, with mindfulness, awareness, and fear. One should please the guru with reverence of body, possessions, and practice. I have also explained this in the "Twenty Verses on the Guru." The characteristics of a guru to be abandoned are: lacking compassion, filled with anger and malice, arrogant, attached, and unrestrained. Like this: "Without compassion and wrathful, arrogant and unrestrained, a self-praising guru, the wise should not rely on." That is, lacking compassion and abandoning sentient beings, with an angry mind and harboring malice, holding grudges for a long time, arrogant due to lineage, wealth, or learning, extremely attached to external possessions and internal sentient beings, and unrestrained in behavior, indulging in drunkenness and other dissolute actions. Praising oneself for the sake of gain and honor or out of jealousy, and unable to tolerate hearing the fame of other holy beings. In short, in the Condensed Tantra, it is said: "Arrogant and controlled by anger, greedy for wealth and without learning, deceiving disciples to seek profit, falling from the supreme state of bliss, not giving empowerment, extremely attached to possessions, dissolute and with harsh words, filled with desire for sensory pleasures. Wise disciples should avoid such a guru as they would avoid hell, for he is an obstacle to attaining perfect enlightenment."
