If, for some reason, such as having to leave abruptly before completing the retreat, and then wanting to complete the retreat later, it is best to start over from the beginning if possible. If not, it is said that reciting an additional half a million mantras on top of the retreat count will suffice. As it says in Lekdrub: "Having recited half in one place, if one recites elsewhere, even if all the recitations are completed, all of them become meaningless. For such recitation, according to the ritual, one should recite more than half a million. Or recite in an empty place, or recite elsewhere, or start the retreat again." So it is said. If the retreat is not completed in one sitting, reciting an additional half a million mantras on top of the retreat count will suffice. Regarding the general benefits of recitation, it is said in the Sutra Requested by Strong Arms: "Whatever sins one has committed in other lifetimes, all are purified by recitation. If all sins are purified by recitation, one will attain accomplishment with the initial intention. There, the Victorious King, the Lord, said, 'The root of all these dharmas is the mind.' The mind initially attains the happiness of gods and humans, as well as heaven and liberation. The faults of the mind cause rebirth as animals, the mind dwells in hell, the situation is miserable, and one becomes poor and destitute. A person whose mind is extremely pure, earth, water, fire, wind, birth, old age, death, etc., all harm at the beginning, middle, and end are separated, and one attains liberation, happiness, and peace. Common to all secret mantra accomplishments, small happiness is separated from hundreds of sufferings, afflictions, poisons are extremely frightening, and one can obtain them with the initial mind." And so on. In particular, as stated in the scriptures, the benefits of holding the Dharani that purifies obscurations are even more extraordinary. Fourth, regarding the suchness of meditation, there are three. In the Later Meditation Sutra, it says: "Secret mantra female place grants accomplishment, sound place yoga grants memory, sound end liberation grants to that, these are the three suchness." Tibetan scholars combine the signless samadhi of the conduct tantra with the action tantra. First, regarding the suchness of the fire place: Visualize oneself as the deity, with all its limbs fully complete, and in the heart, a flame burning like the tongue of a lamp, without hot touch, in the midst of peace, abiding on the moon disc.

Focus single-mindedly on the nature of the letters of the mantra's words, transmitted one after another. Practice with the yoga of breath retention until clarity is attained. This is the basis for accomplishing all activities such as pacification. Second, the suchness of the sound's abiding is: Visualize the rosary of the mantra very clearly in the center of the moon at the heart of your own deity, like the tongue of a peaceful flame. After a short while, without focusing on its form, think only of the natural sound of the mantra, like the sound of a bell. Retain the breath and focus single-mindedly until a clear appearance is attained. This is the basis for the arising of calm abiding. Third, the suchness of the end of sound is: Even the mere sound of the mantra is analyzed and deconstructed, and knowing that its essence is free from the three—arising, ceasing, and abiding—one rests one's own suchness in the state of non-conceptual wisdom. This will give rise to the wisdom of insight and become the direct contributing cause of liberation. In general, the six deities, the three branches of recitation, and the three meditations must be entered into and focused on, with stability gained in each preceding one before proceeding to the next. Although it should be so, even now, during the stage of merely counting recitations, after the recitation is mostly completed, at the end of the session, all three, or the latter two, should be connected to the samadhi. Third, the subsequent activities are twofold: the activities of the session and the intervals between sessions. First, at the end of the session, when the recitation is completed, join the backs of the two little fingers together. Place these two with the back of the right hand against the front of the left hand, crossing them. Entwine the right index finger around the left middle and ring fingers, and the left index finger around the right middle and ring fingers. Place the two thumbs on the middle joints of the index fingers. Keep the two little fingers aligned and raised, making the vase mudra, and recite the qualities of recitation, offer the merit of recitation, pray for the desired meaning, and then place the rosary before the support. Gather the four lineages of the heart, the moon, and the mantra rosary into the main deity, then draw them into the sky, make offerings, praises, confessions, and finally reabsorb them into yourself. Drawing the wisdom being out of one's own body and making offerings, praises, and requests for departure to it is only the explanation of the lower tantras. Practitioners of highest yoga
