What are the faults of a practitioner? Those are the eighteen faults of a practitioner. What are the twelve indispensable dharmas? Unwavering faith that deeply fears samsara is indispensable. A lama who guides the path to liberation is indispensable. Wisdom that understands the continuum is indispensable. Diligence endowed with armor and courage is indispensable. Accumulation that is not satisfied with the three trainings and two accumulations is indispensable. A view that realizes the nature of knowable things is indispensable. Meditation that abides in the natural state of mind is indispensable. Conduct that transforms all actions into the path is indispensable. Instructions that abandon adverse conditions, obstacles, demons, and wrong paths are indispensable. Practice of instructions that is not just limited to words is indispensable. A great confidence of inner peace at the time of separation of body and mind is indispensable. A result that spontaneously accomplishes the three bodies is indispensable. These are the twelve indispensable dharmas. The eleven signs of a holy person are: Little jealousy and arrogance are signs of a holy person. Small desires and contentment with meager things are signs of a holy person. Absence of heroic demeanor and overbearing arrogance are signs of a holy person. Absence of hypocrisy and duplicity are signs of a holy person. Whatever one does, one examines and contemplates, and does it knowingly with mindfulness, is a sign of a holy person. Guarding the law of cause and effect like the apple of one's eye is a sign of a holy person. Absence of duplicity regarding vows and commitments is a sign of a holy person. Absence of partiality towards close or distant, new or old beings is a sign of a holy person. Not getting angry when others commit evil and being patient is a sign of a holy person. Giving all victories to others and taking defeats upon oneself is a sign of a holy person. Being different from ordinary people in thought and action is a sign of a holy person. These are the eleven signs of a holy person. The opposite of these are signs of a non-holy person. The ten dharmas that are without benefit are: No matter how much one honors and serves the illusory body, it is certain to be impermanent and decaying, so there is no benefit. Being miserly and greedy towards material wealth is

No matter how much effort is made, one will depart naked and empty-handed upon one's own death, which is of no benefit. Building castles and mansions, no matter how much hardship is endured, one will depart alone upon death, and the corpse will be carried out, which is of no benefit. Giving children and grandchildren material possessions with a loving heart, at the time of death, there is not even a moment of help, which is of no benefit. Holding onto affection and protecting relatives and friends, one will depart alone and helpless upon one's own death, which is of no benefit. Even if there are many children and grandchildren, due to impermanence, even if one possesses the wealth of one's own generosity, it is certain to be abandoned, which is of no benefit. For the sake of this life, no matter how much effort is made in managing land and business, upon one's own death, one will be completely separated from dwelling and relationships, which is of no benefit. Even if one enters the Dharma gate with faith, if one does not practice according to the Dharma, the Dharma will instead become the cause of falling into the lower realms, which is of no benefit. Even if one studies diligently through hearing and contemplation, and understands a great deal of Dharma, if one does not put it into practice, one will not be able to take it with one at the time of death, which is of no benefit. Even if one stays for a long time with a virtuous and noble spiritual friend, if one does not have faith and respect, one will not receive the qualities and blessings of the superior, which is of no benefit. These are the ten useless Dharmas. The ten Dharmas of causing suffering to oneself are: Living in a family without food is like a fool eating poison, buying suffering for oneself. Committing evil deeds without Dharma is like a madman jumping off a cliff, creating suffering for oneself. Deceiving others is like consuming poisonous food, creating suffering for oneself. An incompetent person holding a high position is like an old woman herding cattle and sheep, creating suffering for oneself. Not striving for the benefit of others with altruism, but instead striving for one's own benefit with the eight worldly concerns, is like a blind person wandering in the wilderness, creating suffering for oneself. Engaging in great undertakings that cannot be accomplished is like a weak person carrying a heavy burden, creating suffering for oneself. With arrogance, disparaging the teachings of the lama and the Buddha is like losing the opportunity to meet a great person, creating suffering for oneself. Abandoning practice and going to the city of evil is like prey
