It is necessary like a hungry person meeting delicious food. In between, it is necessary like one's own mind giving rise to certainty, obtaining a wish-fulfilling jewel. Finally, it is necessary like giving rise to certainty about non-duality, the false cave collapsing. It is necessary to be certain about that one suchness, like a crow flying from a ship. These are the ten necessary dharmas. The ten unnecessary dharmas are: If you realize the emptiness of mind itself, you do not need to study and contemplate. If you know awareness is stainless, you do not need to purify sins. If you abide in the true path, you do not need to accumulate merit. If you cultivate the natural state, you do not need to meditate on skillful means. If you know conceptual thought is dharmata, you do not need to meditate on non-conceptuality. If you know afflictions are uprooted, you do not need to rely on antidotes. If you know appearances and sounds are illusory, you do not need to accept or reject. If you know suffering is accomplishment, you do not need to seek happiness. If you realize your own mind is unborn, you do not need to transfer consciousness. If whatever you do is for the benefit of others, you do not need to accomplish your own benefit. These are the ten unnecessary dharmas. The ten particularly excellent dharmas are: Among the countless sentient beings of the six realms, one human body endowed with leisure and fortune is particularly excellent. Among the many faithless people, one person with faith is particularly excellent. Among the many vehicles of the path, this vehicle of essential meaning is particularly excellent. More excellent than the many wisdoms arising from study and contemplation is one instant of wisdom arising from meditation. More excellent than the many conditioned virtues that are practiced is one instant of unconditioned virtue. More excellent than the many samadhis with objects that are meditated upon is one instant of samadhi without objects. More excellent than the many contaminated virtues that are practiced is one instant of uncontaminated virtue. More excellent than the many experiences that arise in the mindstream is one instant of realization dawning. More excellent than the many intentional virtuous actions that are practiced is one instant of unintentional conduct. More excellent than the many material offerings that are made is not grasping at anything. These are the ten particularly excellent dharmas. The ten dharmas that are good no matter how they are done are:

For a person whose mind has turned to Dharma, it is fine whether they engage in activities or not. For a person who has severed doubts in their mind, it is fine whether they meditate or not. For a person who has severed attachment to desirable qualities, it is fine whether they practice non-attachment or not. For a person who has directly realized the nature of reality, it is fine whether they sleep in an empty cave or become the leader of a large assembly. For a person who knows appearances to be illusory, it is fine whether they stay alone in a mountain retreat or travel the kingdoms without direction. For a person who has gained mastery over their mind, it is fine whether they abandon the qualities of desire or rely on them. For a person who possesses the mind of enlightenment, it is fine whether they practice in solitude or benefit others in an assembly. For a person with unwavering devotion, it is fine whether they stay at the feet of the guru or not. For a person who is greatly learned and understands the meaning, it is fine whether they attain accomplishments or encounter obstacles. For a person who has attained supreme realization, it is fine whether they have common signs of accomplishment or not. These are the ten dharmas that are fine no matter how they are done. The ten qualities of the sacred Dharma are: the ten virtuous dharmas, the six perfections, all of emptiness, the aspects of enlightenment, the four noble truths, the four concentrations, the four formless absorptions, and the appearance in the world of the maturation and liberation of tantra, etc., are the qualities of the sacred Dharma. Among humans, the kshatriya caste is great and noble, the brahmin caste is great and noble, the householder caste is great and noble, the four great kings and the six classes of gods of the desire realm, the seventeen classes of gods of the form realm, and the four classes of gods of the formless realm appear in the world, these are the qualities of the sacred Dharma. Stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, arhats, pratyekabuddhas, and buddhas who know all aspects appear and arise in the world, these are the qualities of the sacred Dharma. By the power of the generation of the mind and aspiration, with the spontaneously arising compassionate form bodies, until samsara is empty, the benefit of beings spontaneously arises.
