It is like the earth collapsing, creating suffering for oneself. Not cherishing the innate wisdom, but being distracted by worldly affairs, is like a Garuda breaking its wings, creating suffering for oneself. Recklessly using the wealth of the Lama and the Three Jewels is like a child biting a burning coal, creating suffering for oneself. These are the ten dharmas of creating suffering for oneself. The ten dharmas that are of great benefit to oneself are: Abandoning worldly attachment and aversion, practicing the sacred Dharma, is of great benefit to oneself. Abandoning family and friends, relying on noble beings, is of great benefit to oneself. Abandoning worldly activities, engaging in hearing, thinking, and meditating, is of great benefit to oneself. Abandoning villages and acquaintances, staying alone in solitude, is of great benefit to oneself. Cutting off the attachment to desirable objects, being able to abide in a state of non-attachment, is of great benefit to oneself. Being content with meager possessions and having no desire for fine things is of great benefit to oneself. Not entrusting one's autonomy to others, but keeping one's vows firm, is of great benefit to oneself. Not looking to the temporary happiness of this life, but striving to achieve the permanent happiness of enlightenment, is of great benefit to oneself. Abandoning attachment to phenomena, practicing emptiness, is of great benefit to oneself. Not letting body, speech, and mind remain in an ordinary state, but striving to unite the two accumulations, is of great benefit to oneself. These are the ten dharmas that are of great benefit to oneself. The ten genuine dharmas are: Believing in karma and its results is the genuine view of those with inferior faculties. Realizing that all phenomena, internal and external, are the union of appearance and emptiness, clarity and emptiness, bliss and emptiness, awareness and emptiness, is the genuine view of those with middling faculties. Realizing that the object of observation, the act of observing, and the observer are inseparable is the genuine view of those with superior faculties. Remaining in single-pointed concentration is the genuine meditation of those with inferior faculties. Remaining in the samadhi of the four unions is the genuine meditation of those with middling faculties. The object of meditation, the act of meditation, and the practice are inseparable, remaining in a state of non-objectification is the genuine meditation of those with superior faculties. Protecting karma and its results like the apple of one's eye,

It is the correct conduct of the lowest faculty. To practice all dharmas as dreams and illusions is the correct conduct of the middle faculty. Not practicing anything at all is the correct conduct of the highest faculty. The gradual decrease and pacification of self-grasping and all afflictions is the correct sign of warmth for all three faculties, high, middle, and low. These are the ten correct dharmas. The ten mistakes of practitioners are: It is extremely mistaken to not rely on a lama who practices the holy Dharma properly, but instead to follow deceitful talkers. It is extremely mistaken to not seek the whispered instructions of accomplished masters, but instead to insist on meaningless intellectual Dharma. It is extremely mistaken to not use the immediate appearances to make the most of one's life, but instead to make extensive preparations with the intention of staying permanently. It is extremely mistaken to not contemplate the meaning of Dharma alone, but instead to always preach Dharma in a crowd. It is extremely mistaken to not give away surplus possessions as offerings and generosity, but instead to hoard wealth and possessions with miserliness and deceit. It is extremely mistaken to not protect vows and commitments properly, but instead to let the three doors be unrestrained and immoral. It is extremely mistaken to not familiarize oneself with the meaning of realizing the nature of reality, but instead to waste one's life on insignificant activities, back and forth. It is extremely mistaken to not subdue one's own wild and unruly mind, but instead to subdue the wild and unruly minds of children. It is extremely mistaken to not cultivate the experiences that arise in one's mind, but instead to cultivate ways to become great in this life. It is extremely mistaken to not exert effort now that the auspicious circumstances have come together, but instead to enjoy laziness and idleness. These are the ten mistakes of practitioners. The ten necessary dharmas are: First, one needs genuine faith that fears samsara, like a wild animal escaping from a prison pit. Second, one needs diligence that one will not regret even if one dies, like a farmer plowing the fields. Finally, one needs the peace of mind of not having to die, like a great person who has accomplished a great task. First, one needs to know without hesitation, like an arrow hitting the vital point of a person. Second, one needs to meditate without distraction, like a mother whose only child has died. Finally, one needs to know without effort, like a cow being chased by an enemy. First, one needs certainty about the Dharma.
