One needs to accomplish the intention of the holy ones. One needs to ensure that the three doors of body, speech, and mind are not tainted by faults, through mindfulness, awareness, and diligence. One needs to have a firm and steadfast commitment to the chosen deity, with armor and courage. One needs to ensure that the reins of the mind are not lost to others, through conduct free from attachment and clinging. One needs to strive constantly to accumulate the two accumulations, through the grasp of the three—preliminary, main, and concluding practices. One needs to direct the mind towards benefiting sentient beings, directly or indirectly, through love and compassion. One needs to ensure that all phenomena are not lost to substantiality and characteristics, through wisdom and understanding. These are the ten necessary dharmas. The ten dharmas to be relied upon are: Rely on a holy guru who possesses realization and compassion. Rely on a secluded and delightful monastery that is blessed. Rely on a friend who is consistent in view and conduct and is trustworthy. Rely on provisions that are mindful of the faults of livelihood and are moderate. Rely on the unobstructed instructions of the lineage of accomplished ones. Rely on substances, medicines, mantras, and profound interdependent connections that benefit oneself and others. Rely on food and methods that suit one's constitution. Rely on religious practices and conduct that benefit one's practice. Rely on disciples who possess faith, respect, and good fortune. In the four activities, constantly rely on mindfulness and awareness. These are the ten dharmas to be relied upon. The ten dharmas to be abandoned are: Abandon a teacher whose actions are mixed with the eight worldly concerns. Abandon companions and bad friends who harm the mind and practice. Abandon places and monasteries that are distracting and full of harm. Abandon a livelihood obtained through theft, robbery, and deceit. Abandon actions and activities that harm the mind and practice. Abandon food and conduct that harm the constitution. Abandon clinging attachment bound by desire and miserliness. Abandon conduct that is reckless and causes others to lose faith. Abandon meaningless activities of going and staying. Abandon concealing one's own faults and proclaiming the faults of others. These are the ten dharmas to be abandoned. The ten dharmas that should not be abandoned are: Do not abandon appearances, as they are the self-radiance of the mind. Do not abandon thoughts, as they are the play of dharmata. Do not abandon afflictions, as they are the manifestation of wisdom. Do not abandon desirable qualities, as they are the fertilizer for experiential realization. Do not abandon sickness and suffering, as they are virtuous friends. Do not abandon enemies and obstacles, as they are the prompters of dharmata.
