Therefore, first, for the sense consciousnesses, objects appear, and knowing their distinctions is mental attention. Among mental factors, the attention that grasps objects as signs, thinking, "This form is beautiful, not beautiful," and "This sound is pleasant, not unpleasant," and so on, these attentions arise dependent on the mind consciousness. As the Madhyāntavibhāga states, "There, seeing the meaning is consciousness; its distinctions arise from the mind." That is to say. The occasions when mind consciousness does not arise are when Master Vasubandhu says in the commentary on the Thirty Verses, "The arising of mind consciousness is always without attention, and the two samādhis together." Therefore, it should be known that in these five situations, mind consciousness is temporarily absorbed into the ālaya consciousness, so the focus on dharma is not clear, so it is said to be a situation where mind consciousness does not arise. Second, explaining the immediately preceding condition and the afflicted mind, there are two parts: briefly stating the names and extensively explaining the characteristics. The first is: "Immediately preceding and afflicted mind, two." It is said. If one wonders what is the immediately preceding condition among the four conditions explained for the arising and ceasing of the six aggregates, some consider it to be the sixth mind aggregate, while others think it does not exist in reality. However, this is because the Hearers do not accept the classification of the six aggregates, and they have not understood the tenets of the Great Vehicle, which accepts the eight aggregates. Therefore, the mind abiding in the ālaya is divided into two parts, called the immediately preceding mind and the afflicted mind. The second part is divided into three: explaining the immediately preceding mind, explaining the afflicted mind, and briefly summarizing the characteristics of both. The first is: "From the six, this will be known." It is said. The function of the immediately preceding mind is that even when the six consciousnesses arise, it acts as the immediately preceding cause of their arising; even when the six consciousnesses cease, it acts as the cause of storing the power seeds of the six aggregates in the ālaya consciousness. Therefore, it is the immediately preceding cause of both arising and ceasing. That is, when the six aggregates cease, the immediately preceding consciousness, which is said to be one with the mind element, carries the seeds to the ālaya consciousness, and immediately afterwards, like waves from water, from all the seeds

The mind that dwells on and engages with the (six senses) fluctuates and enters, thus giving rise to the immediately preceding mind. If one of the six aggregates arises as a cause, then only one immediately preceding mind arises; two do not arise. If the cause of many arising abides nearby, then that many will arise. Therefore, when the previous moment of the six aggregates ceases, the immediately preceding also closely connects with the cause of the subsequent moment, so it is the immediately preceding mind. Therefore, according to the number of moments of arising and ceasing of the six aggregates, the immediately preceding mind also arises in connection with that same number. If asked, how is such an immediately preceding mind known? The answer is: through the direct perception of a mind endowed with the yoga of uniting calm abiding and insight, and from the profound and vast teachings of the Buddha, it is known by inferring with the mind. Secondly, as it is said in the sutra, "From this, there is mind." It means that a part of the immediately preceding mind, known as the afflicted mind, also arises from the Alaya consciousness. This is because, failing to realize the stainless nature of one's own mind, and with a defiled mind focusing on that Alaya consciousness, clinging to it as "I," generating pride, thinking oneself to be supreme, and being attached to cherishing oneself more than others, and because of the ignorance that arises from not recognizing its lack of inherent existence, the four afflictions are constantly associated. Any aggregates that cannot withstand rational analysis and will eventually be destroyed, that is, clinging to the five aggregates as belonging to "me," or clinging to "I" as being one with the aggregates, or clinging to "I" as existing within the five aggregates, or clinging to the five aggregates as arising from "I," there are twenty kinds in total. Moreover, each of these is associated with the three times of past, present, and future, dividing into sixty kinds. Generally, because of clinging to the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, all these (clinging) arise, therefore it is called the afflicted mind. As Master Vasubandhu said in the Thirty Verses: "It is based on that and arises, Mind focuses on that, Consciousness is inherently egoistic, Obscured and unspecified, Always accompanied by four afflictions." It means that this (afflicted mind) is the place of afflictions, therefore, all valid and invalid consciousnesses arise from it. This (afflicted mind) is obscured by the habits of the Alaya consciousness, and its nature is unspecified.
